Some random thoughts as I wait for my garden to dry so I can plant
Posted Friday, May 2, at 9:32 PM
* The way I see the Democrat primary is pretty simple: You know what you're going to get with Hillary Clinton, and if that's OK with you, go for it. If you're willing to take a chance on someone who talks a good game, but really hasn't proven themselves, vote for Barack Obama.
* After unloading a truck the other day here at the paper, I had an interesting conversation with the driver. I heard on CNN the night before that it costs about $1,300 to fill up a semi. There's no way that could be true? Well, it is. The driver told me that the over-the-road semis have two, 150-gallon tanks. Diesel is well over $4 per gallon.
* I still haven't figured out why "healthy" foods cost so much more. Sugar is way cheaper than the other stuff. Fat free items are much more than the regular foods. As prices go up, and wages flatline, we can't afford to eat healthy.
* Every time I read, listen or watch something about the mortgage foreclosure crisis, I remember something my dad told me when I was much younger. He said never have a rent or house payment that is more than a week's salary. He said if you do that, you'll never get yourself in trouble.
* Shakamak High School is now looking for a boys basketball coach. I know someone who has a lot of time on their hands: Joe Hart. The former Union High School coach may be able to talk Billy Packer into being his assistant coach.
* Speaking of Joe Hart ... I haven't had a chance to see the Thunderbird he painted on the new Eastern Greene gym floor, but from what I heard it's pretty impressive. Joe does good work.
* There are a lot of good local candidates in Tuesday's primary. It would be a shame if at least 50 percent of the registered voters didn't turn out.
* There has been a lot of talk about smoking lately. Nancy Cummings has done a good job of bringing that debate to the forefront. Both of my parents were smokers, but I never picked up the habit. I'd be lying if I said it doesn't bother me when I'm around a group of people who are smoking, but I don't judge them because they want to smoke. It's their choice. Just like it's my choice not to go places where people smoke.
Full-day kindergarten can help build a solid foundation for students Two Greene County school boards recently voted down full-day kindergarten, despite Gov. Mitch Daniels' belief that it will help Hoosier children become better overall students. The local boards have that right, and I understand their reasoning: Financial concerns...
Will Americans continue to drive SUVs, big trucks? Being above average in most things is good, but not when it comes to gas prices. A couple of days ago it was reported that the average price for gasoline hit a record -- nationally -- at $3.53 per gallon. What's the gas prices in Greene County? As of the writing of this column the cheapest I could find locally was $3.57, and it was as high as $3.62...
Did you feel the earthquake? Did you feel the earthquake? I must admit I can usually sleep through anything, but when it hit shortly after 5:30 this morning (Friday, April 18), it woke me up. My wife got up and asked what happened, and once I got up, we walked around the house. I asked if it was storming, and she said no...
Students to offer sneak preview of musical It's time to pass along some odds 'n' ends as we enjoy warmer weather and some sunshine. Let's all hope the wintry mix last weekend was the last of the season. It's time to start working in the garden! A sneak preview Linton-Stockton High School will present The Wizard of Oz on April 25-27. From what I've heard, it should be a great musical this year...
It's not easy to do 'the right thing' This past weekend was beautiful. It didn't rain. It was warm. It was sunny. Hopefully that was a sign of things to come. We don't need any more rain, that's for sure. While sitting on the porch reading the newspaper Sunday evening, the weather wasn't the only thing on my mind. I kept going back to something I watched on TV while at lunch one day last week...
Lions Club does a lot for Bloomfield, county If something good is happening in the Bloomfield community, there's a good chance the Lions Club is involved. The organization has been helping Bloomfield and the Greene County community since 1950. Now, they're hoping to get more people involved. The Lions Club will host an informational meeting April 10 at the Odd Fellows Lodge, approximately three miles north of Bloomfield on State Road 157. ...

Some odds 'n ends ... In this crazy world of bad news, how about some good news with your morning coffee, mid-day soft drink or after-work iced tea (or something stronger if it's been a bad day)? Three years ago Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC started a program offering their customers a chance to help others in our area...
Have you ever been to Arizona? It's been a hectic past couple of weeks, so let me apologize up front for not adding to my blog. The newspaper's annual Pride edition will be published March 29, and it's a long process to produce the special section. Plus, my wife and I spent three days in Arizona (March 7-9) watching our daughter play golf for Ball State University...
