Linton youth group headed to the Big Apple

Tuesday, May 4, 2010
A Linton youth group will hit New York City this summer on an inner-city mission and is working hard to cover the costs.

The Linton First Christian Church youth group will visit NYC June 6-12 with a team of 12, explained Chris Hardesty, who serves as the church's youth pastor.

"We wanted to do some inner city stuff to show the kids there's a need right here in our country ... and there are people in our country that go without everyday," he explained.

When the team arrives they'll stay at a church in Brooklyn and do some work in soup kitchens among other tasks.

"The main target is the working poor. They're not homeless, but they can't make ends meet," Hardesty said.

The group will use the subway for transportation -- which will also be a new experience for many of the kids.

"I hope they learn they can help people wherever they're at and they can show God's love to people wherever they go," he added.

Cost of the trip is about $700 per person and the group is working hard to raise the funds.

A chicken noodle dinner is slated from 12:30 - 3 p.m. on May 16 at Linton First Christian Church. Cost is $9 for adults, $4 for children and free to children under 4 years of age.

Tickets are available at the door as well as at the church prior to May 16. You can also call Greg or Katie Elliott at 847-7537 if you want tickets.

A softball tournament will take place May 22 with all proceeds going to the trip. For more information on the tournament contact the church at 847-9535.

"Those are the two main fundraisers," Hardesty said, noting the group is also booked with miscellaneous projects.

This is the first inner-city mission for the church's youth group, Hardesty said.

"We're working with the Center for Student Missions ... we found the opportunity through their Web site. They partner with about 40 different missions in New York City and Brooklyn and Manhattan," he explained.

A bake sale at Wal-Mart might help also to raise funds and would give the entire community a chance to help the youth make this trip. I know many who might not be able to attend a ball game or dinner but still would like to contribute, just a thought if it's not already planned.

Sounds like a great cause. I used to live in NYC and the poverty can be heartwrenching.

It's too late to help this trip but if the pastor is interested in future fundraising I might have some opportunities for that. He can reach me at spinningyarns@vzw.blackberry.net
