Offer to Worthington skaters of funds for new equipment

Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Ever since an area in the Worthington Park was set aside for skateboarding, it's been a frequent topic of discussion at Worthington Town Council meetings and it came up again this week.

Park Board members say the equipment is not in good shape and they fear it's an accident waiting to happen.

"It's got to go," said Delores Calvert. She said it has aged and several ramps or pieces of equipment are spongy and do not feel sturdy.

The area centers around a large concrete pad that was installed by the board at the board's expense. But other equipment has been built or brought in by the skaters.

Replacing the equipment could be expensive for the skaters but a solution was offered by the Worthington Police Department.

Town Marshal Dennis Conaway told the Council and the Park Board that up to $1,000 was available to buy materials to build replacement equipment. However, he said the funds came with a stipulation.

"It's not for 15 or 16 pieces of equipment that might not be safe," said Conaway. "It's for two or three very sturdy, well-built pieces of equipment. Just let me know."

Park Board members said they would like skaters, and parents or other interested individuals, to get hold of them and talk to them about the state of the current equipment, and let them know if they are interested in Marshal Conaway's offer of help.

In other park news, Calvert said with spring weather comes spring clean-up and there's lots of work to be done in the park.

"We're having some stumps removed, we're getting a new cabinet in the Hinchman Shelterhouse and we're having a new steel door installed on the public outdoor restrooms," said Calvert.

Calvert also said there are sticks to pick up and lots of sprucing up to do -- volunteers would be appreciated.

"If anyone would enjoy being in the park during this beautiful weather, have at it, we'd be happy to have a little help," said Calvert.

Contact any Park Board member for information or to volunteer or call Delores Calvert at 875-3209.

I will spot a $100.00 to add to what Dennis has. I am old - grumpy and way too out of shape for skate boarding but it will be a safe place off the streets.

Kudos to Worthington for reaching out to kids who are engaging in a non-trouble making activity, keeping their bodies in motion, instead of being in front of a video game or a computer. Nicely done!

Casa del Muse Art Gallery and Studio is offering a skateboard deck painting class for kids on March 25 and 26 from 3-5 pm. We would also be glad to donate a portion of the funds (up to $100.00) to the skateboard board to provide a safe and healthy environment for the kids to enjoy. Visit www.casadelmuse for more information or call 812.322.8986

This is great!!

I'm so glad they are letting kids skate!

Kids need something to do. They are bored. We need a teen center where they can go to watch decent movies, get help with homework, play games, have outdoor concerts. (decent music) A place where morals are instilled. If we could help just one kid stay off the streets and learn about things that really matter it would be worth all the hard work.

WOOOOW!! that is awesome!! i am so glad to hear that a town the size of worthington is pushing ahead to help the local kids for a change!! kudos to all of you!! i hope the kids see this and appreciate what the town is doing for them...and to the kids, please show the same respect to the town and keep the equipment maintianed and the area provided clean! (and i know it goes without saying because the kids will do that) i'm also glad to see the town board assist with this type of project....the city of linton "promised" the local skateboard kids the same thing many, many years ago and instead, used the money that the local skateboarders raised and donated to make a circular concrete slab out by the pool (you know, the one so conventiently used during the carnival every year) and then proceeded to run the skateboarders off of it!! amazing huh...the money the kids raised was used for concrete to benefit the city and then the kids couldn't use it!! and yet...still no place for the kids to ride skateboards even to this day!! but anyway....congrats to worthington and to the skaters in their community!! keep it up!
