Born July 1, 1940 in Monroe County, he was the son of Otis F. and Flora (Wilson) Deckard.
He was a stock handler for General Electric and was a member of the Moose Lodge in Bloomington. Gene was an avid outdoorsman who loved to camp and fish. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Maxine Deckard whom he married December 31, 1975; children, Mitzi Fluke (Alan) of Ellettsville, Scott Shields (Debbie) of West Chester, Ohio, Gene Ragan of Bloomington, Cathy Burcham - Lund of Solsberry, Marilyn Burcham - Reese (Rich) of St. Peters, Mo. and Jackie Burcham - Crabb (Jim) of Bloomfield; three brothers, Jim Deckard (Margaret) of Brazil, Joe Deckard (Telena) of Stanford, and Jerry Deckard of Solsberry; three sisters, Shirley Eads (Dwight) of Heltonville, Stella Montgomery of Bloomington and Sue Burch (Jack) of Solsberry; grandchildren, Brock Beaver, Haley Goodwin, Tori Shields, Courtney Shields, Kate Shields, Conner Ragan, Amy Kelley, Travis Bland, Erica Crabb and Kyle Stoud; great-grandchildren, Kayla Goodwin, Balke Goodwin, Micah Beaver, Nathanael Beaver, A.J. Kelley, Tavin Bland, Tabitha Bland, Luke Kelley and Kara Wilke; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Sharon Casey.
Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home in Bloomfield, with Rev. Arlen Pope officiating. Interment will be in Prairie Chapel Cemetery in rural Lyons.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday and one-hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.
