Marsh Madness takes flight this weekend

In an effort to showcase the Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area to local residents and people who live throughout the Midwest, the first-ever Marsh Madness Bird Festival will take flight this weekend.

The event will coincide with the annual Sandhill Crane and water fowl migration now under way.

"Marsh Madness is about so much more than just Goose Pond. The waterfowl and Sandhill Crane migration at GPFWA may be the hook that brings people into the community, but the event itself is really about the community and what the community of Greene County has to offer," Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area Property Manager Brad Feaster said. "The members of the planning committee all share a vision for Marsh Madness. That vision is of a multi-day, countywide festival that celebrates Greene County's abundant natural resources. This year's inaugural event is the first step toward realizing that vision."

The event will kick off at 5 p.m. Friday with a chili dinner that features keynote speaker Indiana Wildlife Federation Executive Director John Goss at the Roy Clark Community Building located in Humphreys Park in Linton.

Goss, who formerly headed the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, helped to engineer the deal for the DNR to purchase the more than 8,000 acre Goose Pond/Beehunter Marsh area from Florida developer/farmer Maurice Wilder in 2004.

Former Indiana Speaker of the House John Gregg, from nearby Sandborn, will be the master of ceremonies for the opening night program.

Saturday's activities will run from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A continental breakfast will be served at the Roy Clark Building from 6:30 -- 10 a.m.

During the day on Saturday there will be self-guided tours of the surrounding area starting at 6:30 a.m., where festival participants can see the annual bird migration.

Bus tours will also be available.

In addition to the tours, festival-goers can attend workshops on such topics as nature photography, painting and backyard wildlife habitat among others at various venues in the park and in Linton, Feaster said.

Hardy Lake Bird Rehab Center will be giving presentations and have several birds of prey on display.

A craft and vendor fair will also be conducted during the day Saturday.

Children's activities will include some art and coloring contests as well as bird house and bird feeder construction, Feaster noted.

The festival will be based out of Humphreys Park, but some workshops and seminars will take place at other venues in Linton, such as Carnegie Heritage and Arts Center of Greene County as well as at the Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area.

Feaster said there has been a lot of behind-the-scenes planning going on for month to make Marsh Madness a success. He's also encouraged by the community support for this weekend's event.

"We are certainly encouraged by and thankful for the support we have received from local businesses and community leaders. Without this community-wide support, Marsh Madness simply could not happen," Feaster said.

Sponsors of the event include: Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC, Peabody Energy Group, Linton Family Pharmacy, Triple H Gun Club & Grill on the Hill, Regions Bank, Bloomfield State Bank, MainSource Bank, Shields Hardware, Camp Refuge, Bender Lumber Company, Mercury Cleaners and Worthington Antiques.

"In addition to financial support, it takes an army of volunteers and other contributors to make Marsh Madness happen," Feaster added.

Other contributors include: City of Linton, Linton Civitan, Linton Rotary, Friends of Goose Pond, Carnegie Heritage and Arts Center of Greene County, Sassafras Audubon Society, Linton Public Library, Greene County Daily World/The Shopper, Linton First Christian Church and Indiana Division of Fish & Wildlife.

Well it looks like the weather is going to be great for this weekend. Hope the roads are good enough to work!

-- Posted by BadSpellerrr on Thu, Mar 4, 2010, at 7:35 PM

If I see tons and tons of new gravel I will be very dismayed. I just recall back over the last 50 yrs of "this will be a money making deal" stuff that has happen at the Goose Pond.

However I will support it with good thoughts and will be the first to say I am sorry if it brings in a new business for the people of the County.

-- Posted by gary g on Thu, Mar 4, 2010, at 8:48 PM

This is for the birds.

-- Posted by LITERATI on Thu, Mar 4, 2010, at 9:13 PM

Ill believe all the prosperity when I see it,the only one who came out on this deal is the farmer named wilder. I cant believe in an economy where we cant afford to keep our schools afloat,we are spending millions on birds. Just another example of irresponsible government waste. Sorry, hope im proven wrong.

Why would they hold this while hunting season is still in?Could this not make for a very dangerous place for children to be?

-- Posted by jodybug on Fri, Mar 5, 2010, at 6:24 AM

How much gravel was put on these roads for this week-end? Since we are on such a tight gravel budget. I would say most farmers pump more money into the county than bird watchers. We can not even get decent roads and bridges to run our business in a efficiate manner. Last Fall we had to pull our trucks in with a tractor on a county road just to get to our feild. We have to drive extremly slow on the county roads. Our feilds are more smooth than our county roads. I only hope we did not spend alot of our gravel money for this weekend, by the way how much money will this weekend bring into the county? Most farmers will pay more in taxes in one Month than what the county will gain this week-end. Like I have said before take care of the business that are already here first

This is wonderful. I believe, that sometimes people do not appreciate what is right under their own feet. Linton is a wonderful small town, with one very unusual characteristic, the volunteers!

From the Freedom festival, the Music weekend in September, the Phil Harris events and now the Marsh Madness, the volunteers are unbelievable.

I know of NO other community of this size that offers so much for so many.

Just say thanks to these people and quit complaining!

-- Posted by Tinkerbelle on Fri, Mar 5, 2010, at 12:28 PM

Tinkerbelle, I do hope you are saying that in jest. This makes my head spin thinking you may be not joking. This County is breaking the backs of us farmers with taxes, our infrastructure is in ruins. Now because some "city people event" was pretty and nice you are thinking that is the way it is to be. Like Obama does not know -- it has to be paid for-- You come out then drive some of the County roads, I do not mean the paved roads. If your car makes it back after a day of driving with all parts in tack and you can see the real color I will pay for your wash job.

Did the County dump limestone/gravel?

-- Posted by the voice of the common man on Fri, Mar 5, 2010, at 1:28 PM

Limestone, it'll be gone within a couple months...gravel is unheard of.

-- Posted by just my opinion 3 on Fri, Mar 5, 2010, at 1:39 PM

-- Posted by jodybug on Fri, Mar 5, 2010, at 4:43 PM

I think this is just wonderful...I hope it is a great success and we can look forward to it every year...WTG to all involved!

Both of my businesses were very busy this weekend. Lots of poeple from out of town here for Marsh Madness.

Thank you, to all of those who planned this event. The wetlands has been great for my business for a few years now.

-- Posted by robturpin on Sat, Mar 6, 2010, at 10:58 PM

I checked with local hotels, they had vacancies and reported no increased activity.

-- Posted by johnpaulcoleman on Sun, Mar 7, 2010, at 9:39 AM

I hope all enjoyed their festivities, I wonder why the hotel's weren't full???? If they can't keep the hotels full that are here now, with this big of an event, Why in the world would they expect someone to invest and put in a brand new hotel??? It sounds like they like to make excuse's on why people don't come when they are finding, their group is quite "small" maybe they should start explaining to people who are expecting more $$ why...

-- Posted by whatsupingreenecounty on Mon, Mar 8, 2010, at 7:13 AM

Actually both hotels were full this past weekend! So I dont know who you called but they were. I cant say if they were full because of bird watchers or not! Why do you think Allens has added on? Both are staying extremely busy. Drive by there late at night, parking lots are full. Probably because of all the work that has been going on in this area lately. (Edwardsport, Bear Run, SAIC, highway 54 to Dugger)

-- Posted by BadSpellerrr on Tue, Mar 9, 2010, at 4:02 PM

Uh-oh, someone's not telling the truth.

Maybe the "places of lodging" didn't report increased activity since, if you are constantly at or near capacity, you can't have any more activity.

If I call the Linton Inn and Allen's Motel, will they just give me specifics on their business, over the phone to a stranger?

-- Posted by James30096 on Wed, Mar 10, 2010, at 8:30 AM

There was no new gravel placed on the road south of my residence, which was part of the tour. I don't know how the traffic didn't get stuck in the mudd. I almost get stuck in the mudd on a daily basis. It stinks!

-- Posted by doodlebug on Thu, Mar 11, 2010, at 10:27 AM

This is just not true, I went personally to both hotels on friday night and saturday night at midnight and both had rooms. Yes they will discuss how full they are with anyone.
