Shakamak student faces alleged charge of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription

Monday, March 1, 2010
A Shakamak student faces an alleged charge of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription after an incident at the school.

Daniel G. Jones, 18, has been summoned to appear in Greene County Circuit Court on March 10 for allegedly having four Alprazolam pills at school.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed in Greene County Circuit Court, Jasonville police were notified by the school principal on Feb. 24 after receiving information that Jones had the pills.

The four pills --which compare to Xanax -- turned up after Jones was searched at the school by staff, states the court document. The pills were in the pocket of his sweatshirt.

Jones told school staff that he got the pills from another student who was not at school at the time.

According to the court document, Jones also told school staff that he did not have a prescription for the pills and that he was going to sell them to get money for gas.

Jasonville Police Sgt. Brian Pilant responded to the school's request and noted in the court document that Jones was very cooperative in the questioning.

The pills were later identified by poison control as being Alprazolam.

Possession of a controlled substance without a prescription is a Class D felony.

Is it legal for school staff to search students?

-- Posted by sarah m on Mon, Mar 1, 2010, at 7:44 PM

Who cares, they got a druggy out of the school!! One less pushin' crap to our kids!

-- Posted by MommiezBoyz on Mon, Mar 1, 2010, at 9:10 PM

he was 18yrs old and yes it is legal. he also admitted to it, and to the fact he was going to sell them for gas money so... haven't you heard of them taking dogs in to see if there are drugs in lockers around cars? as a parent I am glad they did this, it shows me that someone is trying to curb the drug pushers in school.

if they were gonna get the so called "druggies" out of the school then they would take more percausion and actually do something about all the others there too im sure theres more than just one at any school!

-- Posted by cantheman on Mon, Mar 1, 2010, at 11:45 PM

he might not even be a druggy, I don't know him, but he is a drug pusher. Because he was going to sell them.

For those of you that have posted a comment or the ones that are reading these getting ready to post a comment...you need to think before you speak! I am sure that no one knows the whole story except for the ones involved (because there IS more than one involved, even though this story doesn't mention their name)so everyone else needs to keep their nose out of it and mind their own business!

The only thing these open forums (aka peanut gallery) are good for is opening the flood gates for 95% of the idiots. All of those who either don't work, or fell short in their professional career goals and then sit all night watching CSI, Criminal Minds, DEA, NCIC, LAW & ORDER, COPS. You speak without knowledge, you speak with no regard to whom it may hurt, you make these accusations and convictions under an assumed name and or alias. I for one praise the school and law enforcement for a job well done, pray for the child who made poor choices (who hasn't?), and sympathize with the family for what they are going through. I think instead of shutting the opinion forum down every time these idiots go on their playground tangents, the editor should hit the delete button or ban these certain users.

Hey say what !?!? ..... In case you havent noticed this is in the newspaper !! Which means that it is now everyones BUSINESS !!! , No one said anything bad about these people except thats its a good thing that they were caught and that more actions need to be taken more often... SO you are intittled to your opion just as everybody else is. If people were smart enough to say no to the drugs in any situation, maybe we wouldnt have to be leaving any type of these comments on here.. As a parent im glad actions were taken... If I was a principal of any school, Id be drug searching the school, lockers, and students every week. Its their right and by law they can search anything on school property. And WITHOUT permition. That is on the forms the parents sign at the beginning of the school year... READ the fine print. BRING IT TO SCHOOL, YOU DESERVE TO GET CAUGHT... Thats my opion, just like you have your opion. =)

My prayers go out to all who are involved, as this must be an extremly difficult time for the family of this student.

***To Lets be honest ****** I think you said it quite well and honest. It's nice for once to see someone on here write something with logic and not total emotion.

-- Posted by pastgrad2000 on Tue, Mar 2, 2010, at 10:18 AM

This is to letsbehonest...Evidently two more idiots speak ---letsbehonest and myself, now included according to letsbehonest's opinion...?????

Letsbehonest did you not realize by making a comment on here you were opening youself up for this comment...Or were you thinking your comment was above all others..Did you just not see it coming.

Kids are kids and all kids should be watched, and cared for to the best of a parent's ability...I am guessing--- but maybe his parents are just as upset over this as many others that suddenly discover their child has a drug problem or a newfound criminal act. As adults lets pray for (all) our kids and grandkids and that our law enforcment keep up the best job too that they can do....This is not an idiot session.. What does an editor have to do with it...It is however (in word form) a freedom of speech. Something our constitution allows....Right?

-- Posted by oldoak on Tue, Mar 2, 2010, at 10:35 AM

Oh and Sarah M? Thats a perfectly logical question, 99% of people are not aware of that. It is the schools responsibilty to provide every child with a safe learning enviorment. It clearly states somewhere in all school policies that anything on school grounds is subject to search and seizure by school officials and/or an agent acting on the schools behalf or request. Just sayin...

-- Posted by letsbehonest on Tue, Mar 2, 2010, at 10:44 AM

Is it not true also that illegal drugs are not allowed within a certain area around schools too...Don't take more authority away from teachers or schools, as they are the daily building blocks of our childrens look on life, which could influance greatly their choices now and in the future...They are with our kids from K-12. Which is more waking hours than we spend with them usually. They must care too or they wouldn't have chosen the careers they have.

When it comes to kids safety from those who do or sell drugs, no law can be strong enough. What ever involvement it takes from teachers, police, parents, any of the school employees, or even a good citizen.----can help keep everyone's childrens safe. Fighting drugs-----is that everyone should get involved when it comes to our youth's protection. Laws are set up to protect on aggrivate.

I AGREE 100% WITH SOCCERMOM1722 WE ALL HAVE AN OPION THATS WHAT THIS IS HERE FOR... EVERYBODY ACTS LIKE THERE SO INNOCENT AND DIDNT KNOW WHAT THEY WERE DOING! COME ON NOW WE ALL HAVE BEEN AT THESE KIDS AGE AND THEY KNOW WHAT CHOICES R WRONG AND RIGHT THEY JUST MADE THE WRONG ONE IT HAPPENS......

-- Posted by ladiesman47441 on Tue, Mar 2, 2010, at 12:57 PM

We need to fight addiction with education at the earliest level.Dont judge! We all are equal.

-- Posted by xdrill on Tue, Mar 2, 2010, at 7:24 PM

Maybe we should adress the core problem of drugs in our schools. Instead of calling him a drug pusher or "druggie" let's examine the situation. I hope that all of you are cheering for the fact that a "druggie" got locked up realize the impact this will have on this young man's life. If convicted, this could affect him getting federal financial aid for college. Also, future employers will look at that. So, he can't afford to go to school now, so he looks for a job. Surprise! The only place who will hire someone who has a drug conviction is a fast food place or something involving manuel labor for minimum wage. BTW, it is difficult to advance in fast food with a drug conviction. So he is now stuck with a bottom feeding dead end job, barely makeing ends meet. His life is basically over before it began. What does that mean for him? Well in order to support his future family, he must have more $ than his loser job can provide. What does he do, he sells drugs. It is a never ending cycle. I that instead of ruining his life, maybe we should look at the why and how factor. Obviously those drugs came from somewhere. Why did he have them? Who gave them to him? How did all of this happen? Once we can answer those questions, we can really being to remove drugs from schools. I am sure he is not a bad kid. For all of you think that your teenagers would never do something like that, wake up. I bet you are thinking that this kid and his parents are of a lower social class than you and your kids. News flash, when I was in high school five years ago, some of the top drug providers in the school were those cheerleaders, football players, and others who came from squeaky clean families. One student from my school was expected to become validictorian, until he got busted selling pills out of the trunk of his shiney new car...

Sorry for the spelling and grammer errors. I was in such a hurry. Also, I aplogize if I have offended anyone, but what I said is true. have a blessed day :)

Let's be honest here are we really surprised that they found drugs on somebody in Jasonville. The town doesn't exactly have the cleanest reputation as far as drugs go. They will probably send him to drug rehab classes and make him do community service. The rehab part is a joke although I am a proponent of rehabilitation over filling prisons with drug addicts and wasting money. Most drug dealers don't actually do the drugs themselves. So rehab won't really help this kid out at all.

This is the first time this boy has ever been in trouble. What he did is completely wrong, but I hope he has learned a lesson and will be given a second chance.

DonCon:

Wasn't there a cocaine bust in LINTON, just a few days ago!!???

-- Posted by realitycheck101 on Thu, Mar 4, 2010, at 9:42 AM

DonCon....

There has been alot of drug arrest made in both Jville and Linton. I think alot of it could be because JPD and LPD both have allowed some of their officers to spend a whole lot of time working with the drug task force. Type "LPD officer Goodman" or "JPD officer Vanhorn" in the search engine to refresh your memory. If anyone should be concerned, it should be the other areas your not reading about. Unless your delusional enough to think that everywhere else is drug free!?!?

-- Posted by letsbehonest on Thu, Mar 4, 2010, at 12:27 PM

Everyone on here acts like they are better than everyone. This person is not a bad person because they had illegal drugs at all.

-- Posted by gemini-girl on Thu, Mar 4, 2010, at 2:05 PM

Sierra..the key word is ILLEGAL. It is ILLEGAL. He IS an adult and he KNEW it was wrong!!! I am tired of everybody wanting to deal so lightly with situations. He screwed up and my saying to him would be "Suck it up buttercup" !!!!!

-- Posted by Softball Coach on Fri, Mar 5, 2010, at 6:36 AM

He is a kid who made a mistake. He'll learn from it, but he doesn't deserve a really harsh penalty. The law may say you're an adult at 18, but most people aren't completely matured until long after. Yeah he did something wrong, but that doesn't make him a drug pusher and predator to the youth of Jasonville.

-- Posted by DonCon on Fri, Mar 5, 2010, at 11:31 AM

The thing is he said he was gonna sell them helllo!!! Sell them thats ILLEGAL ppl...theres more than just him involved so why isnt this either person getting any of the fault!?!? Hes gonna have to just pay the price of a mistake!!
