Jasonville Council hires additional police officer

Monday, February 8, 2010
Upon the recommendation of Jasonville Police Chief Rick Van Horn, the Jasonville City Council voted unanimously at Monday's meeting to hire Andrew Duguay as a new police officer replacing the vacancy of Mike Ladson.

Van Horn said Duguay graduated Vincennes University and has worked in the security department at Shakamak State Park.

"He has passed all the tests, and I think he will be good for the department," noted Van Horn.

The council also approved Van Horn's recommendation for Mike Ladson to serve as a reserve officer.

City attorney Jeff Hawkins advised the board that notices should be sent to all Jasonville water customers informing them of a water rate hike and also of the special meeting at 6 p.m. on March 15 regarding the rate increase.

The board approved fire chief Harold Keller's request for Lawton and Cook streets to be a four-way stop street and gave permission for new stop signs to be ordered.

Keller noted that with the completion of the new police station, it would extremely dangerous if that intersection were not a four-way stop.

Keller also informed the board that a street light was needed at the corner of Cook and Meridian.

In her report, clerk-treasurer Charlotte Thomas read an ordinance for paying claims.

Police chief Van Horn reported 15 arrests in January including 13 traffic arrests, one disorderly conduct and one illegal possession of tobacco.

The police department investigated three criminal mischief cases, two thefts, one stolen vehicle, one child welfare case, one illegal possession of a handgun, one minor possession of alcohol and five accidents in the city.

The JPD also issued six traffic warnings, gave five title checks and assisted other departments seven times.

Fire chief Keller said the fire dept. had 17 runs in January including three fire runs, 13 EMA runs and assisted with one car rollover.

Keller reported that the street department cut brush, fixed culverts, repaired city trucks, and cleaned snow.

Council member Peggy Sluder wished the Shakamak varsity girl's basketball team good luck tonight when they play Dugger at Clay City.

In other business, the board:

*Tabled Walter Scott's petition to vacate an alley due to Scott's absence from the meeting and also tabled the Steve Morse alley issue due to Morse's absence.

*Voted for Mayor Roy Terrell to represent Jasonville at SIDC meetings.

*Announced that a meeting to review firehouse bids would be at 6 p.m. on Feb. 23.

How is it more spending if they're replacing a vacant position? The money has already been allocated for that position and the city has funded that position for years. It was just mearly filling a vacant position.
