The predicted big snow blast was a little late getting to Greene County, but an area weather forecaster says about three inches of snow should greet residents when they wake up early Saturday morning.
Rain and snow started shortly after 3 p.m. Friday.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory that will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday.
A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet and freezing rain will cause travel difficulties in the area.
"The transition from rain to snow was a little slower than we thought, so we chewed up of what might have been a little heavier snow for Greene County. We originally thought all of our (television) viewing area would be 4 to 6 inches. Now we think our southern areas are going to be closer to the 3," Jessie Walker, WTWO-TV meteorologist told the Greene County Daily World on Friday night.
The snow is expected to taper off shortly after 6 to 7 a.m. Saturday.
"Saturday we will have snow flurries and it will be windy with highs only in the middle to upper 20s. Sunday looks dry and cold with highs around 30," according to Walker. "It will be a rough day."
More snow is on the way.
"Another snow storm looks to take aim on this area early next week, but it's too early to say for sure but some decent snow accumulations are possible with that storm on Monday and Tuesday," Walker said. "From everything I've seen on that, late Monday into Tuesday could be a decent snow. It's too early to say amounts, but definitely some pretty good accumulations out of that one... Then following that it will be just really cold and we may be looking at lows down in the low single digits at the end of next week. February is going to be a wild month, I think."
There were some event cancellations due to the approaching winter storm.
The Bloomfield First Baptist Church's First Friday program canceled for Friday
The Bloomfield Cub Scout Pinewood Derby is canceled for Saturday. The Boy Scouts Pinewood Derby was postponed and rescheduled for Feb. 20
The Fazoli's Dinner at Union High School was rescheduled to Monday.
The Eminence vs. Linton-Stockton boy's high school basketball game was postponed on Friday.
The high school boys and girls North Central vs. Union game was postponed on Friday.
The Shakamak vs. Clay City was moved from Friday to Saturday.
The Greene County Sheriff's Department reported no major weather-related traffic problems early Friday with only a couple of minor slide-offs according to a department dispatcher.
Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Curt Durnil says troopers worked numerous slide-offs and minor property damage crashes throughout the district early Friday night.
"The roads are slick and drivers need to reduce their speeds for the current conditions. Drivers who reduce their speeds, below the posted speed limit, should not have problems navigating the roads," he added.
