Ex-Indiana player Leary arrested in fraud case

Friday, February 5, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Indiana broadcaster and former Hoosiers player Todd Leary has been arrested in connection with a multimillion-dollar real estate title scheme.

Records show that the 39-year-old Leary was being held Friday in the Monroe County Jail in Bloomington on charges out of Allen County.

According to the paper he was arrested 15 minutes before IU's game with Purdue on Thursday night.

The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne reports that Leary faces 17 felony charges, including conspiracy to misappropriate title insurance escrow funds. The newspaper reports court documents say Leary once worked for a title insurance broker who has pleaded guilty to several charges in a $2.7 million scheme.

Leary was a star at Lawrence North and played for the Hoosiers in 1989-94, including their 1992 NCAA Final Four team. Leary is the color analyst for IU's radio broadcasts.

It couldn't immediately be determined whether Leary had an attorney.

Citing court documents, the Journal Gazette reported Leary's former teammate Brian Evans cooperated with state investigators to uncover the scheme.

The old IU Purdue rivalry, maybe we ought to throw Notre Dame, Butler, and ISU into the fight also. These have to be the dumbest comments I have read on the blogs. Last time I checked both IU and Purdue were Indiana colleges, and both excellent colleges. They also have alot of good ole Indiana boys on both sports programs. Probably we have had other people from our state break the law.

"A student at Purdue University devised a scheme to defraud Half.com users looking to purchase textbooks.

The scammer was charged on December 19, 2007 in a 12 count indictment with wire fraud."

It doesn't matter what college you go to, it matters what kind of person you are and what your ethics are...obviously there are people at both colleges that lack morals and ethics.
