"Souper Bowl Collection" is a canned good drive that benefits local food banks as well as rewards student participation.
"The goal is to encourage charity even in times of struggle or celebration," explained Gene Hall, L-S Junior High teacher.
The collection kicked off Tuesday and will run through Friday, he noted. It's all a part of the Indianapolis Colts reaching the Super Bowl.
"The event, known as the Souper Bowl Collection, will award two points for any can of soup brought to a student's homeroom class and one point for any other canned food with the winning homeroom receiving a prize," Hall said.
The homeroom with the most points will most likely be rewarded with a pizza party, he added.
Plus the program gives back to the community in a time of economic need.
"The connection seemed to be natural ... helping people in the community during this week of celebration," Hall explained.
The homeroom competition will help local community food banks replenish their shelves following the holiday season, he also said.
As a part of the Colts reaching the Super Bowl, the L-S Junior High will also have other contests and activities going on this week.
Some local churches as well as civic organizations are participating in similar food drives.
The Indianapolis Colts face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday in the Super Bowl in Miami.
