LITTLE CINCINNATI -- Eastern Greene High School girls basketball coach Dan Fidago likes to play tournament games in December to get ready for tournament games in February.

Despite two losses at the Toby Yoho Classic here Wednesday to drop to 5-9 and finish fourth in their own tournament, Fidago likes what he sees down the road.

"I really like where we are at," said Fidago, whose Lady Thunderbirds lost to Forest Park 57-36 and Brownstown Central 68-40, two teams that have combined for 20 wins. "We just keep getting better.

"We played two really good teams today. We were right in the game with Forest Park before they opened things up in the second and third quarters. Brownstown is a very solid basketball team as well. I would not be surprised to see them in the regional. I would like to have another shot at them in the regional."

Brownstown Central made 7 of 13 shots in the opening quarter to take a 15-7 cushion. The Lady Braves continued shooting well in the second quarter -- at one point they made six shots in a row -- as they owned a 31-17 advantage at intermission.

After hitting at a 54 percent clip in the first two quarters, Brownstown Central missed just three times in 13 attempts in the third quarter, pushing their advantage to 53-27.

Sammie Bane and Katelyn Shoemaker each hit for 18 points and Jamie Wehmiller added 17. Shoemaker and Wehmiller were named to the all-tournament team.

"We had tired legs," said Fidago. "We had way too many breakdowns defensively. We just gave up too many easy opportunities.

"You have to give Brownstown credit. They hit their shots. We just gave up so much off the dribble."

With leading scorer Samantha Reed, who was Eastern Greene's lone representative on the all-tournament squad, limited to just two free throws, junior Brittany Igel became the main inside scorer for the Lady Thunderbirds.

She accounted for all seven EGHS points in the first quarter and finished with a game-high 15 points to go with four rebounds.

"Igel's performance said it all for us tonight," said Fidago. "They did not have an answer for her.

"I heard one of the Brownstown players say, 'She's a beast and we can't stop her.' Hopefully this will give her a lot of confidence."

Cora Sherfield and Sydney Spice each had two assists and Reed and Holly Hammock each were credited with one steal.

In the loss to Forest Park, Reed led with 14 points and Igel added nine.

Reed had seven rebounds and Alexis Ray grabbed four. Igel had two assists and two rebounds while Sherfield added two rebounds and two assists.

"I like what we did today and yesterday," said Fidago. "We were competitive again today.

"All in all, it was a good two days for us. We will take the positives from this tournament and get ready for the second half of our season."

The Lady Thunderbirds will be off until Saturday, Jan. 9 when they play at North Knox.
