Recycling Center to expand cardboard pick-up route

Friday, December 18, 2009
Look for the Greene County Recycling Center to expand its commercial cardboard pick-up route in 2010.

Erek Wilson, director of the center, explained, "We're now picking up Bloomfield, Linton and Jasonville. We've got close to 100 businesses total. But, there are a lot of other businesses out there and we would like to get them on board with us."

Recycling is a win-win situation for businesses and landfills.

"It saves the cardboard bound for landfills and one of the benefits for businesses is that it reduces trash and could potentially save money," Wilson said.

Overall, 50 to 80 percent of waste generated by a business is cardboard, he added.

"If you think about it everything you get comes in a box," Wilson said.

With increased efficiency, Wilson hopes to service additional businesses throughout the county.

"Since we've increased efficiency we have more time to pick up additional (businesses)," he explained. "I want to alert these places that we are ready to add them."

If you're interested in getting on board, call Wilson at 659-3788.

"It's a free service to businesses. ... If they want to bag up aluminum cans, plastic and paper we'll pick that stuff up too if it's bagged and separated," he added.

Look for additional stops to be added in the new year.

"I want to give businesses a couple of weeks to get on board. ... I'd like to start getting the requests over the next couple of weeks and add them on in the new year," he added.

With the holiday season in full swing, the center also has packing supplies on hand.

"They're free," Wilson said.

The center also accepts glass.

"Just a reminder to recyclers, we do accept glass. Clear, brown, green and colored ... glass bottles, containers and jars. No window glass or mirror glass."

The center also accepts household plastic.

"If it's plastic we'll take it," he added.

In other recycling news, the center now has a new employee.

Tad Branaman of Bloomfield is the new recycling technician at the center.

"He has five months of previous experience in recycling," Wilson said.

The Recycling Center is doing great. Now let's see if we can get courthouse personnel to start recycling.

The courthouse has been collecting recycleables for years now and they generate a high volume of materials that are picked up by recycling center staff on a weekly basis. Keep up the good work Tim and Geno.
