UPDATED: Bloomfield girls take out Lady Bulldogs

Monday, December 7, 2009
Elyse Weddle drained 18 points to lead the Bloomfield Cardinals to a 51-21 romp past Union (Dugger) Saturday afternoon at Glover Gym.

The Lady Cardinals improved to 3-3 on the year and 2-0 in the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conferece. The Lady Bulldogs fell to 2-4 and 0-3 in the SWIAC.

The victory came on the heels of a loss to the class A top-ranked Lady Patriots of Vincennes Rivet last week, prompting their coach to praise them for a very solid recovery.

"I was happy with the way we played," Bloomfield coach Chris Hitchcock said. "The biggest thing was that we were centrally focused. I did not feel we played exceptionally well against Rivet. I was not pleased with that result."

For Union (Dugger) coach Benji Boyd, while the final result was disappointing, he wasn't displeased with his team's efforts.

"I thought the girls played with more effort and intensity than they had in other games in which we were outclassed, like Eastern Greene and South Knox," Boyd said. "I can't fault their effort."

While the Lady Bulldogs were limited to just 21 points on the afternoon, Boyd said it wasn't for a lack of trying to score.

"We were able to get good shots," he said. "But we just couldn't knock down very many."

On the opposite side of the coin, Boyd cited a still learning defensive effort as another culprit.

"Obviously our defense has to come a long way, but we're working on it," he said. "When you are smaller and slower than you opponents you have to be positioned properly at all times -- not just sometimes like more athletic players might get by with."

For Hitchcock, Saturday's contest proved to be a good response by his team to the goals he had established earlier in the week.

"We came into the Union came focused on what we needed to do to improve," he said. "We were able to create transition opportunities with our defense.

"It was good that everybody got experience against Union. This was a good overall team performance."

The Cardinals will host Barr-Reeve Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs will be off until Monday, Dec. 14 when they play another varsity-only game at Palestine-Hutsonville, Ill.
