The Bloomfield Police Department is giving back to the community through its local Christmas program.

Bloomfield Town Marshal Ken Tharp provided details on the program called 'Bless this Dinner' -- which provides food baskets and Christmas presents to Bloomfield families.

"The purpose of this program is to not only improve police/community relations but to also provide assistance to families that are employed but are having a hard time providing for their family during the holiday season," Tharp explained in a press release.

The program has grown over the years.

"The program was initially started to provide a Christmas dinner to families (and) through support from the community and businesses the program eventually grew," Tharp explained.

Now the program includes the purchase of hats, coats and gloves for local children as well as a toy to open on Christmas morning.

The assistance of Bloomfield IGA and Pamida has also made the program a success.

"Bloomfield IGA donates 10-12 turkeys each year and prepares the holiday baskets for the Bloomfield Police Department to hand deliver," Tharp explained. "Pamida provides the Bloomfield Police Department with a convenient local business, good selection and quality merchandise to do our Christmas shopping."

To apply, you must reside within the Bloomfield town limits. Children that will be considered for assistance should be from birth to the age of 12.

Applications can be picked up from the Family Life Center in Bloomfield.

Monetary donations can be dropped off at the Bloomfield Police Department located at 12 E. Main St., Bloomfield, Indiana 47424. Questions or comments can be sent by e-mail to marshal@bloomfieldpd.com

This is truly a great idea. It sounds like the Bloomfield Police Dept. has some really good people on it's force. The part I really like is trying to develope good relations with community members. That is becoming a thing of the past. Good luck fellows in all of those you help this Christmas. I wish I could give you a hand.

Yes the Bloomfield PD has some great people on its force.

2 years ago I was passing through Bloomfield when my tire blew. I was blocking traffic in a car with out of state plates. Instead of a ticket (which MANY police officers would have given) I was given help. The officer called for a mechanic to jack up my eclipse, the tire was removed and the pseudo-spare put on. I was given directions on how to get to the nearest walmart and wished well.

I really appreciated the help and thought at the time what a nice place to live Bloomfield must be. Not only were the police helpful but the locals who were no doubt inconvenienced by my blocking of traffic were nice as well. No one honked their horn and several offered to help.

Even the people at walmart were friendly. 2 people were in front of me for repair work insisted that I go ahead of them so I wouldn't be late arriving at my final destination.

What could have been a horrible experience, wasn't. My thanks to the Police in Bloomfield and the nice people in Greene County.
