Donations sought for holiday decorations in Worthington

Monday, November 16, 2009
Besides the improvements that came with the completion of a streetscape project, residents in Worthington were treated to some new holiday finery last year in their downtown area.

This year something new may be added, but donations are needed.

According to Town Clerk-Treasurer Gloria Klass, the decorations were the result of many residents dropping large and small cash donations into a holiday fund and a committee of volunteers that worked hard to make giant handmade lighted snowflakes for every lamppost and a wreath for every downtown door.

"People really came through and I want to thank everyone for what they've done whether they made a donation or worked on the project. People were just very generous about it -- with their money and their time," saidKlass.

Klass started the project last year by setting jars around town to collect pennies.

"People did drop their pennies in, and every little bit made a difference, but we also got some checks," said Klass. "Now we have 18 snowflakes and 70 wreaths that were hung on the doors of our businesses. They are beautiful and I just think it's wonderful."

Klass said the committee working on the project came up with very classy looking decorations, but now they're hoping to add a little something more this year.

"I'm going to set the jars around again," said Klass.

Additional decorations being considered include a Santa house on an empty lot on N. Washington St. or a big tree for the Triangle.

Donations may be dropped into the jars placed at various locations around town or taken to the Clerk-Treasurer's Office in the Worthington Municipal Building.

I am a christian and I wish people would stop calling "Christmas " holiday in fear of offending someone. What about offending me and the many other christians out there. Do you not care about offending us? I guess we have just sat back and let this go on so much that people think we don't care but I for one do care. Please call Christmas what it is not just "holiday" : it is the day we celebrate the birth of our dear savior and LORD Jesus Christ.

Good for you. Some people don't. They celebrate other holidays (Yule, Hannukah, and Kwanzaa come to mind).

It's not about leaving out one group of people. It's about recognizing that that group isn't the only one worth mentioning.

Well, kwanzaa is a sorta fake holiday invented in 1966 to celebrate african unity or some such.

Hannukah is Judeo-Christian and the two have always coexsisted very well together since I can remember. Christmas is the reason for THIS season and is OUR tradition as americans. Its fine to include everyone in our Christmas celebration but why dillute the holiday that has established our value system and morals with fake holidays, and secular merriment (new years). Nearly 80% of the citizens of the US call themselves christians. Can't we keep our Christmas celebration as Christmas since nearly everyone is a Christian...
