Thursday, November 12, 2009
Shoals spoiled the Bloomfield coaching debut of Chris Hitchcock as the host Lady Jug Rox defeated the Lady Cardinals 43-35 in a girls basketball game in Martin County.

The Lady Cardinals trailed 18-14 at intermission. The closed the gap to 24-22 going to the fourth quarter, but Shoals outscored the visitors 17-13 over the final eight minutes.

"We came back and took a two-point lead on a couple of occasions in the fourth quarter. We had chances to push the lead to four, but missed some free throws. It was a tight game in the fourth quarter, but we could not weather the storm."

Hitchcock said he had mixed emotions.

"I was really proud of the second half, but equally disappointed in the first half," he said.

Brittany Combs had 11 points, 11 rebounds and two steals, shooting 4 of 13 to go with four turnovers.

Center Elyse Weddle was limited to three points on 1-for-7 shooting and had one rebound before fouling out.

Julie Riggins hit two 3-pointers as part of an eight-point performance. She added four rebounds, one steal and two turnovers.

There was no jv game.

The Lady Cardinals will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Edgewood.

"We had a unique first game of year," said Hitchcock. "We grew up from one half to the other.

"Our goal is to get better. We have a chance to work on some things at practice and be more aggressive and ready to play Tuesday at Edgewood."
