Respect was paid to those who have served our country during a Veteran's Day memorial service at the Anderson-Poindexter Funeral Home lawn in Linton on Wednesday.

Jim Meng, director at Anderson-Poindexter, provided the introduction as well as thanked all veterans who have served our nation.

"This is an opportunity for us to publicly commemorate those who have served our country," he said, noting both active and retired military members.

"Veterans we love you for what you stood for and you will never be forgotten. ... May God bless you and your families," Meng said.

He also requested a time of silence for those who lost their lives in the recent shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.

John R. Gregg, former speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives, served as the guest speaker.

Gregg compared veterans to heroes.

"You don't have to leave home to find heroes," he explained. "We've got heroes in our community. We don't have to look to rock-n-roll or sports ... (heroes) are everyday citizens who fought in the past and fight today."

Today there are active military members who are as young as 19 who have already served one tour of duty, he added.

"Since the Civil War, our country's been in too many fights -- but, we realize that's the price of freedom ... freedom is expensive," Gregg said.

Since World War II, troops have been sent to Korea, Haiti, Lebanon, Vietnam, Nicaragua, Afghanistan and Iraq, he added.

"And each time it has been citizen armies," he added. "We need to thank each and every one of these men and women who came here today ... as well as those overseas."

During the ceremony, Michael Fonderhide of Linton sang the national anthem and the Rev. David Atkins of the Linton Assembly of God provided the invocation.

Meng and Gregg also placed a wreath in honor of all veterans.

American Legion Post 22 and VFW 7118 presented the 21-Gun Salute.

In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower proclaimed Nov. 11 as Veteran's Day.
