Odon man allegedly tries to outrun unmarked ISP car

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

A 36-year-old Odon man was arraigned in Greene Superior Court on Monday on charges racked up when he allegedly tried to outrun an Indiana State Police trooper driving an unmarked Ford Mustang.

John Robert McGovren was arrested by ISP Trooper Eric C. Nash on the afternoon of Oct. 27, after McGovren, coming off County Road 635S, reportedly ran a stop sign and pulled out into Nash's path southbound on State Road 45 causing Nash to hit the brakes.

The trooper activated the lights and siren but McGovren, driving a Chevrolet Cavalier, did not stop and instead, sped up.

A probable cause affidavit states that McGovren passed other vehicles on hills and curves, in double yellow no-passing zones three separate times before he finally pulled over.

McGovern also allegedly did not stop at the stop sign when he reached State Road 58 and headed directly in towards the Crane gate. He then had to turn around and head back north, and ran the stop sign again.

The affidavit says at one point, speed reached in excess of 90 mph.

Northbound on SR 45, McGovren finally turned onto CR 300S, stopped and exited the vehicle.

Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Terry Wade arrived to assist and the car, driver and passenger were searched and the passenger was transported to a nearby store to wait for a ride. The Cavalier was towed and McGovren got a ride to the county jail.

McGovren did not have a valid license and a check of his record revealed he had been convicted in another county of driving while suspended.

According to the affidavit, there were eight bottles of Coors beer on ice in the back seat of the Cavalier, and an unopened half-pint of Crown Royal in the front.

McGovren was believed to have been drinking and failed some of the standard field sobriety tests then tested .10 BAC on a Datamaster breath test administered at the jail.

McGovren was released from jail on $9,500 bond.

The charges filed against him include: Resisting law enforcement, a class D felony; operating a vehicle while intoxicated in a manner which endangered a person, a class A misdemeanor; operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a class C misdemeanor; operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration of at least .08 grams but less than .15 grams of alcohol in blood or breath, a class C misdemeanor; driving while suspended, a class A misdemeanor; and reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor.
