Shakamak to host Family Fall Festival

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

For some good family fun, be sure to check out the Family Fall Festival slated for Friday at Shakamak Elementary School.

The event runs from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the gym and will feature inflatables, a basket auction, games, food, face painting and more.

Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization President Toni Rooksberry provided the details on the free event that's open to the public.

"This is the second year to have it and we want to make it an annual event. It's for the kids, teachers and parents to get together in a fun atmosphere, not just in the stress of school," she explained.

It's good, clean fun that isn't costly.

"Anybody that comes gets a ticket for door prizes," she added, noting Holiday World tickets are just one of the items to be given away.

A basket auction is also a part of the festival.

"Each (elementary) grade makes a basket and people bid on them ... whoever has the highest bid at the end of the evening gets the basket," Rooksberry said.

The baskets are all based on a theme. Look for Laker pride, Cracker Barrel, sweet tooth among others.

"The (basket auction) money goes to the PTO and the class making the most off its basket wins a party," she added.

There's also lots of fun games like bean bag toss, basketball pitch, hole-in-one golf, pumpkin relay race and candy bar walk.

Game tickets are five for $1 in advance or four for $1 at the door.

Everyone who plays receives a token even if the player loses. Tokens can then be traded in for prizes.

"It's good, cheap fun," she added.

If your child is a fan of inflatables then be sure to check out the inflatable houses and obstacle course. It's $5 for a bracelet.

Look for chili, hot dogs, tacos in a bag, nachos, pickles, homemade goodies as well as popcorn, cotton candy and more to be available for purchase.

"The food court is in the cafeteria," she said, noting different grades and organizations use it as a fundraiser.

"Last year people really enjoyed the festival. It is open to anybody. You can live in any community and come," Rooksberry said.

The event is sponsored by the elementary PTO, elementary choir, sixth grade parents, junior class parents and Shakamak Jr./Sr. Choir Boosters.

My daughter can't wait until Friday. She comes home every day and talks about it. So, we will be out on Friday! Sounds like some good ole' fun.
