Born May 29, 1921 in Owensburg, he was the son of James Alva and Hermie (Sullivan) Wilson. He graduated from Owensburg High School with the class of 1939 and attended DePauw University for two years before entering the U.S. Navy. During World War II he served as Lieutenant Commander and a pilot. Upon his return to Greene County he met and married, Lula Mae Street. They had 60 years together before her passing in September 2007.
Walter was an active member of the Bloomfield First Christian Church, Bloomfield Odd Fellows 457, Solsberry Masonic Lodge 411, Indianapolis Murat Shriners, Bloomington York Rite, Fraternal Order of Police, American Legion Post 196, Eastern Star 538 and the "Old Newberry Vets Club." Walter served as President and a member of the Bloomfield Town Board for 16 years, Crane Toastmasters Club and was presently serving on the Board of Directors of the Bloomfield Housing Authority.
He was retired from Crane after years of working as an engineer in boiler operations. His hobby was woodworking and helping others.
Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8 at the First Christian Church in Bloomfield, with Rev. Dave Wilde officiating. Interment will be in Dishman cemetery in rural Springville.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home in Bloomfield and 1 hour prior to services Sunday at the Church. Bloomfield Odd Fellows #457 service will be at 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
