BPD arrests convicted felon with loaded gun

Monday, November 2, 2009
A convicted felon from Jasonville, who was allegedly carrying a fully-loaded semi-automatic weapon with the safety off, was arrested by a Bloomfield police officer and hauled off to the county jail Halloween night.

Dustin L. Turley, 22, was wanted on an arrest warrant issued out of Clay County in connection with a petition to revoke his probation on a conviction of receiving stolen property.

Turley's criminal history also includes a class D felony conviction in 2006 for pointing a firearm.

Bloomfield Deputy Marshal Harvey Holt was working Saturday night when he received an anonymous tip alerting him that Turley was a wanted man and he was in Bloomfield.

The officer investigated and located Turley at a residence in the Hillside Mobile Home Park.

With assistance from Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Brad Deckard, Holt made contact with Turley around 8:10 p.m. and asked him to step outside the residence.

As Turley was taken into custody, Officer Holt asked him if he had any weapons on him and Turley said he did not.

Then when the officer started to search him, Turley said he had a gun in his waistband.

Deputy Deckard cleared the gun after Officer Holt removed a Hi-Point 9 mm semi-automatic pistol from Turley.

Officer Holt said the gun had seven rounds in the magazine, one in the chamber and the safety was off at the time he recovered the gun.

In addition, the officer reported finding a pipe, with residue which field-tested positive for marijuana, in one pocket, and eight pills identified as a Schedule IV controlled substance in another pocket. Turley did not have a prescription for the medication.

Turley was transported and booked into jail where he was being held without bond pending his appearance in court.

The preliminary charges filed against Turley on Monday in Greene Superior Court include: Possession of a handgun without a license, a class A misdemeanor; possession of a handgun with a prior felony conviction within 15 years, a class C felony; possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony; and reckless possession of paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor.
