Brittony Landis' third grade class at Linton-Stockton Elementary School.

One Linton-Stockton Elementary class has been busy collecting cans and raising money for the Linton Community Food Pantry.

Brittony Landis' third grade class just wrapped up a community service project that raised $388 and collected 434 cans for the food pantry.

The class sold popsicles during lunch and recess. Students could pay 50 cents or trade a canned food item for a popsicle.

The class provided details on the project with the Greene County Daily World.

"It was fun," said Mattie McBride, adding she was able to see her cousins while selling popsicles.

Ben Burris agreed and added, "We thought we did a very good job. We're all proud of ourselves for doing such a good job."

Lots of students brought in canned goods instead of money, explained Shawna Couch.

"The pantry supports lots of families with the food we give them," said another student.

Brittony Landis explained that this was the first time the class participated in such a project.

"We were learning about communities in our social studies books," she added, noting the project was a good opportunity to work together and help the community.

The project also incorporated math.

"We used bar graphs and compared one day's sales to the next," Landis explained.

Students also made flyers to advertise the popsicle sale.

The class also took a field trip to the local food pantry to learn more.

Brylee Coleman explained that the food pantry allows local families to get food once a month.

"We learned that they had to sign a paper (in order to get the food)," she added.

But, the food pantry has more than just food.

There's clothes, toys and other knick-knacks.

"They sell the clothes and toys and use the money to help pay for the building," explained one student.

Sometimes the pantry assists up to 36 people a day, another student said.

The students in Landis' class also agreed that it was fun to help the community and if given the chance they would like to help out again.
