TELEPHONE SERVICE RESTORED: Phone service down in Linton, parts of Greene County

Thursday, October 29, 2009
ATT Spokesperson Jackie Janus reported all service was restored at 2:20 p.m. Thursday. Janus also said the break occurred at a location in the Edwardsport area.

Around 2:30 p.m., landline and cell phone users reported their phone service was working again in the Linton area. Service in Daviess County was also reported to have been restored.

Around 2:15 p.m. AT&T Spokesperson Jackie Janus confirmed that technicians are currently working on the site and beginning to repair the break where a fiber optic line was cut earlier today.

"The cut was caused by a third-party contractor performing construction work earlier this morning," said Janus.

Janus said more details about the cut may be available later in the day.

"Right now, all of our efforts are focused on getting our customers back in service as quickly as possible," said Janus. "Service is expected to be restored later this afternoon.

Several areas in the southwestern Indiana region have been affected.

The communication outages are not affecting everyone in the county equally. The Linton area, and possibly Jasonville as well, seems to be experiencing more difficulty than other towns in the county.

Credit and debit cards are being accepted and it's business as usual in Bloomfield at the Bloomfield IGA and the Pamida Store and in Worthington at Vest's QuikMart and Subway and the Worthington Country Market.

Lyons Town Clerk-Treasurer Kim Flynn said she has placed outgoing calls and received incoming calls from the Lyons area as well as from Sandborn, Loogootee and Indianapolis but Town Marshal Ron Sparks has had difficulty reaching law enforcement in Daviess County. Flynn said she is unable to get any calls through to numbers in Linton.

AT&T cell phone service in the Linton area is still not working but many AT&T cell phone users say they are receiving signals at most other locations in the county.

The gates of Crane NSWC remain open for business as usual. The Public Affairs office said the Crane facility has not been affected by the widespread communication problems in the rest of the area and there are no expectations that the base would be closed.

Updates:

Around 11 a.m., the Linton Police Department issued the following announcement through their Nixle alert service: Many major (cell phone) lines are currently down in Linton. You can contact us on 812-847-4411 if 911 will not go through.AT&T is currently having phone line issues. Local phones or land lines are currently working however some 911 lines are out of operation. To contact us in an emergency call 812-847-4411 if your call will not go through on 911. This has affected many cell phones as well. If there is any more major changes we will let you know...

Around 12 p.m. a dispatcher at the Greene County Sheriff's Department said they were still unable to make outgoing calls on landlines, but they have been receiving 911 calls all morning. Although the communication problems have affected law enforcement's 800-mhz radio system, other radios are working fine and officers are able to communicate with the department. The Sheriff's Department also reported they have established a radio contact to the Linton Police Department.

The Linton area is without some telephone service today (as of Thursday morning) and other areas of the county may also be experiencing problems.

The Linton Police Department was contacted by AT&T as a courtesy this morning to fill the department in on what's going on with the lines.

According to an LPD dispatcher, AT&T is experiencing trouble with its fiberoptics and calls can't be made in and out of the immediate Linton area -- both cellphones and land lines.

Calls from a Linton land line to another Linton land line are working for some.

As for 911 calls, LPD has two trunks that service 911 -- one from Kokomo and the other from Evansville. AT&T informed the LPD that the trunk from Evansville is cut near Vincennes. The LPD, though, is still capable of receiving 911 calls because the other trunk is working properly.

The dispatcher said that as of 10:30 a.m. AT&T doesn't know where the problem is with the fiberoptic land line.

That line also is affecting some computers, including Linton banks, the dispatcher reported.

Callers outside the Linton area have reported they receive a busy signal when they try to call numbers in Linton.

In Worthington, some people are reporting they are receiving calls but are unable to call out.

A dispatcher at the Greene County Sheriff's Department also said they are unable to call out, but they are receiving 911 calls.

This report will be updated when more information becomes available.

-- Posted by LintonOutlaw on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 12:29 PM

Showoff! LOL

-- Posted by pisces on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 12:43 PM

Geesh. I hope that is gets fixed and quickly. Especially since the area departments can be up and running at full speed. I wasn't aware the banks here were closed. I wonder what else is? I mean even the IGA runs off of computers and stuff. Seems to have messed up a lot of things.

Also, thanks for the updates.

-- Posted by ab47438 on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 12:44 PM

I have Verizon mobile broadband, and it's working, thank goodness :)

This is crazy; did this affect the debit/credit machines at stores in Linton or Jasonville?

-- Posted by IndiMa06 on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 12:53 PM

I don't know IndiMa06. That is a good question. I do need to go to the store...:)

-- Posted by ab47438 on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 12:56 PM

Most restaurants I've driven by in Linton have signs up on the drive-thru saying they can not do credit/debit transactions. Walmart seems to be unaffected, but they probably don't depend on the telephone network to run cards.

-- Posted by cgarwood on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 12:59 PM

yes walmart is not taking CC at this time!

Don't you know this is the beginning of SkyNet's takeover of the human race!? Watch for the Terminators next! :)

-- Posted by zenos on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 1:16 PM

Wow, a simple thing like a little fiber line breaks, and our whole little world completely stops.

I would HATE to see what would happen in a real emergency. What happens if power, gas, or water were to go out? It's not as impossible as it seems. We should all probably have another look at our disaster readiness.

-- Posted by NewberryUSA on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 1:36 PM

The reason that the Crane facility has not been affected is that they are not on the AT&T phone network. They are lucky enough to have Smithville Telephone Company as their Phone / Broadband Network provider.

-- Posted by Evolouie on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 1:46 PM

as much as we pay att for cell phones they should have tons of people working for them

The Unabomber said technology would be our undoing!

-- Posted by Ex-Pat on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 2:17 PM

Any idea when landline service will be restored? And if I'm travelling out of the area, though I have AT&T cell service, will I have a signal?

-- Posted by pisces on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 2:23 PM

I don't think anyone has a time on when it will be restored. It is hard telling, probably. I know people in Terre Haute have coverage. Seems like it is just Linton and Jasonville mostly. Lucky us.

Oh, and having no water is not fun either...been there done that.

-- Posted by ab47438 on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 2:31 PM

Everything in Eastern Greene (including AT&T cell service) is working fine... well, same as always, anyway.

-- Posted by gc_info on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 2:34 PM

word on the VU campus is that the line was cut at the site of the new Edwardsport power plant

-- Posted by jd1950 on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 2:52 PM

I am back on here...(Jasonville) Thanks to everyone involved in resolving the matter. Also, a big thanks to GCDW for updating everyone.

-- Posted by ab47438 on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 2:55 PM

Do people even realize how much we depend on computers and phone networks. I would hate to see what would happen to all of us if we had a real catastophic event. Most would not live through it without being able to call or text someone. This is very scary to think about.

-- Posted by andyandbarneyatmayberry on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 2:56 PM

It's a perfer time to remind everyone to call before you dig! The utilities will come out and locate their lines free of charge. Just call 811 before you dig!

-- Posted by LarryDB on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 3:09 PM

Again, most of eastern greene is in the Smithville Telephone Company coverage area.

And that includes AT&T cell towers that are served by Smithville Telephone.

LintonOutlaw =)) (don't forget to vote Tuesday in NJ)

-- Posted by L A on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 3:48 PM

andyandbarneyatmayberry ..I agree with you and might add electricity and running water ect. There is so much going on anymore that people are silly not to have a plan or be prepared. When we take kids to summer camp for a week there is NO electronics of any kind allowed and we don't have running water or electricity (in camp) and guess what? The guys have a blast using their brains and hands to make up different things to do and use in camp through out the week.

I think everyone should take one hour each evening and turn off all phones, electric, ect and see how nice it is to spend good quality time with family.

i have verizon and i had no cell service today in linton. i live in bloomfield though. i didn't even know there was a problem until i got to work and had no service. people need to learn to call before they dig lol

-- Posted by vlasktom on Thu, Oct 29, 2009, at 4:36 PM

I am a verizon customer and I was also affected by this! Both my cell lines and my wireless internet through Verizon were down most of the early afternoon.

Good grief people. Get a grip.

LintonOutlaw and Zenos, thanks for the chuckle.
