Monday, September 21, 2009
The Bloomfield Cardinals and White River Valley Wolverines got together on the football field Saturday for a regular season meeting of the Bloomfield Youth Football League.

Things got underway with action in the high school division as Bloomfield handed WRV a 12-0 setback.

After a scoreless first quarter that featured a missed field goal by the Wolverines, Gordon Hunter went 36 yards to break the ice.

The Cardinals got into the end zone for the second time of the day when Zaq Query converted a second and 15 into a 60-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

Query led the Cardinals offense with 87 yards on five carries. He was also 2-for-5 passing for 25 yards.

The Cardinal High School team will travel to Bloomington to face the Exile Saturday at 9 a.m.

The second game of the day featured the 14U teams and saw WRV turn the tables on their hosts for a 34-12 decision.

Bobby Harmon gave WRV a first quarter lead with a 1-yard scamper into the end zone, that combined with the two-point conversion by Jake White resulted in a short-lived 8-0 lead.

Bloomfield responded on their first possession of the game and narrowed the gap to 8-6 after a 58 yard march that ended with Cody Hopkins going the final eight yards.

WRV struck again on their next possession moving 51 yards and capping the drive with a 12-yard run by Eric Bland.

Bland padded the lead in the second quarter on another long drive by the WRV offense. This time his one yard trip wrapped up another 51-yard march.

The Wolverines weren't through yet as they took advantage of a Bloomfield fumble and once again march down the field to pay dirt.

This time it was a 55-yard parade that ended when Harmon crossed the goal line for the second time.

Bloomfield's best moment of the game came in the second half when they were able to stop what appeared to another long drive by the Wolverines.

After WRV had moved the ball within the shadows of the Cardinals' goal post, Brandon Haug picked up a loose football and dashed 99 yards for the score. It would be the Cardinals final tally of the game.

WRV added to the lead on a 30-yard pass from Bland to Luke Mowery.

The Wolverine offense was led by Harmon with 94 yards on nine carries and two scores. Bland finished the day with 28 yards on six carries with two rushing touchdowns and 5 of 9 passing for 56 yards and a score while Jake White had six carries for 46 yards. The Wolverine defense was led by Bland, Mowery and Jorden English with 4 tackles each.

The Cardinal offense was led by Hopkins with 23 yards on two carries with a touchdown.

The Wolverines will face Martin County on the Eastern Greene high school field on Saturday at 10:20 a.m. and the Cardinals will travel to Farmersburg to face the North Central T-Birds at noon.

The next contest of the day saw the 12U squads face off. When it was over WRV had collected a 20-12 win.

Bloomfield got on the scoreboard first when Andrew Medcalf connected with Jonathan Krzesniak for a 95 yard scoring strike.

Medcalf's long scoring pass came on the heels of a defensive stand by Bloomfield that kept the Wolverines out of the end zone and turned the ball over at the WRV five.

The Wolverines returned the favor just prior to half-time, stopping Bloomfield five yards short of the goal line as time expired.

Bloomfield's offense sputtered in the second half and were unable to answer another set of long scoring drives by WRV.

Bloomfield's offense was led by Medcalf with 38 yards on 11 carries, 1 of 3 passing for 95 yards and 3 catches for 52 yards with 2 scores.

The Cardinals will take on Owen Valley at Spencer at noon Saturday.

The final game of the day saw the WRV 10U squad hand Bloomfield a 20-12 setback.

The Wolverines offense racked up three touchdowns and a two-point conversion in the first half while the defense allowed only 18 yards to the Bloomfield offense.

Things got a little better for Bloomfield in the second half as the defense stiffened and the offense found life.

Jake King ran the final four yards of a 42 drive and Brayden Deckard added a 20 yard score.

The Cardinal offense was led by Deckard with 34 yards on 11 carries.

The Cardinal 10U team will face Owen Valley at Spencer at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
