Clerk-Treasurer Patty Roark said a town marshal is needed because of the increase in traffic due to the construction of Duke Energy's $2.35 billion coal-gasification power plant.
If hired, the town marshal would issue speeding tickets as well as enforce the town's ordinances, Roark said.
She estimated the start-up cost for the position, which would include purchasing a car, equipment and insurance, to be between $3,000 and $4,000.
Salary would be discussed later if the start-up cost could be covered.
The council also held a public hearing for the town's 2010 budget Monday.
Roark said there are no substantial changes to the budget from a year ago.
Another public hearing on the budget will be Oct. 19, with adoption to follow that night.

Why is the Greene County Daily World covering news in Edwardsport and Huntingburg?
Thanks for reading!
Why not cover "NEWS" outside the area. Is not the Greene County Daily World called a newspaper? I say thank you for the news coverage Greene County Daily World. I moved from linton several years ago, and take the news by internet. I look forward everyday to what GCDW, has to say about my hometown and surrounding area.
Thanks Once Again GCDW
It's important to cover the Edwardsport story because alot of people from Greene County commute that direction. Myself being one of the many.
Thanks GCDW for the info!
Because they wanted to hear something other than crime stories.
Did not Edwardsport use to partner with Bicknell for police coverage? If not or if that was discontinued it seems that may be a more financially responsible way to provide coverage because Bicknell already has trained officers and marked police cars.
keninman, with the power plant and all the activities going on in Edwardsport I just imagine they could keep one officer busy enough to pay for the new car and training. Furthermore I'm sure Bicknell needs their own officers. With the financial boost that Duke has gave Edwardsport I'm sure they can afford it.
