Daviess County Right To Life

GCLC annual dinner

The Greene County Literacy Coalition (GCLC) is celebrating 20 years of literacy at the annual dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 at Saron Church in Linton located at 440 1st St. NE. Doreen Ewert, an associate professor of Second Language Studies at Indiana University and who has a great interest in adult literacy, will be the keynote speaker. Cub Scout Pack 468 meeting

Cub Scout Pack 468 will have their first meetings for the 2009-10 school year starting Sept. 14. Each den will meet at the Bloomfield First Baptist Church (across from the swimming pool) starting at 6:30 p.m. Cub Scouts is open to any boy in grade 1-5. Chapel Fair

A Chapel Fair will be held Saturday at the Greene County Chapel United Methodist Church with a bake sale at 9 a.m. Quilts of all sizes will be available. Fish, hot dogs, Coney dogs and desserts will be served at lunch time. All proceeds will go to the church mission programs.

Developmental screening

Greene County will have a free developmental screening for all children from birth to 6 years of age from 8:30 - 11 a.m. on Sept. 18 at the Linton-Stockton Elementary. Linton families should call 847-6039, ext. 216 to make an appointment. This screening is for every child in the county.

Sheriff's Merit Board

The Greene County Sheriff's Merit Board will meet at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14 in the conference room at the Greene County Jail. The jail is located at 204 County Road 70 East, at the edge of Bloomfield.

Bloomfield Apple Festival

The Bloomfield Apple Festival is Oct. 2-3. This is the 40th anniversary of the Apple Festival. Vendor sites are available by calling Judy Branstetter at 384-3245. The parade will be Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. The theme for this year's parade is Rewind to 1969. Apple Festival Parade entries are now being accepted. Entry forms can be obtained by calling 384-3637. Operation Dress Drop Off

One Enchanted Evening has joined DonateMyDress.org to provide young ladies with special occasion dresses free of charge if they are unable to purchase their own. The group is encouraging girls to donate their prom and special occasion dresses for the cause. Drop-offs will be available Apple Festival weekend, and please call 384-7310 to make arrangements for drop off. Wedding attire and accessories and prom accessories are also being accepted.

Linton trash schedule

The Linton trash pick-up schedule will be one day late the week of Sept. 7 because of Labor Day. If your trash is normally picked up on Monday it will be picked up on Tuesday, and so on through Saturday.

LHS class of 1959 reunion

Ground water testing

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is conducting a statewide ground water quality survey. It is currently seeking residential well owners to participate in this survey. IDEM is in the first year of sampling, and it hopes to revisit each of the sites annually. IDEM specifically identified the following counties as areas where they need additional sampling locations: Bartholomew, Clark, Dearborn, Decatur, Floyd, Greene, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Ohio, Perry, Rush, Scott, Switzerland. The sampling will be free of charge to residents and copies of the results will be provided. The results will be confidential. Fish fry in Owensburg

The Owensburg-Jackson Township Fire Department will be holding a Fish Fry on Sept. 25 from 5-8 p.m. at the Owensburg-Hatfield Library in conjunction with Owensburg Founder's Day Celebration. The meal will consist of a fish sandwich, baked beans, cole slaw, dessert and drink for $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Owensburg CIA. All proceeds benefit the Owensburg firefighters to purchase much needed equipment.

Greene County Recycling news

The Greene County Recycling Center now accepts bagged trash for $2 per bag. The price went up from $1 a bag on Sept. 1 due to disposal fee increases. The mobile recycling trailer will be in Eastern Greene County on Sept. 9-16.

Redevelopment meeting changed

The Greene County Redevelopment meeting scheduled for Sept. 21 has been rescheduled for Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Greene County courthouse.

Coordinating Council to meet

The Local Coordinating Council of Greene County Substance Abuse Task Force will host its monthly meeting Sept. 14 at 4:15 p.m. at Family Life Center, 19 South Washington St, Bloomfield. The mission of LCC is to develop, coordinate, and promote local efforts to prevent the use or reduce the effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among the citizens of Greene County. Anyone who agrees with this mission and is interested in working towards its success is invited to attend. Greene County Kids Fair

The Greene County Kids Fair is Saturday at the Linton National Guard Armory, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The theme this year is "Fairy Tales," and you might even get to meet one of your favorite fairy tale characters. Activities include interactive games, pictures, fingerprinting, health screenings, train safety, alcohol/tobacco/other drugs information, the Smokehouse, and emergency vehicles (fire truck, Air Evac helicopter). There are lots of door prizes (drawings begin at 1:30 p.m.). This family friendly, free, fun event for all ages is also tobacco free. Kids Fair organizers include Greene County Alliance for Networking and Growth, Southwest Indiana Meth Alliance, and the Greene County Daily World.

Cake decorating class

As the first in a series of classes and seminars to help patrons save money with creative activities, the Linton Public Library will have a Cake Decorating class on Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. There is a fee of $8 to cover the cost of the decorating tools and cake that participants will take home. The Nine Mile United Methodist Church will observe homecoming Sept. 13 in the new sanctuary. Apple Festival queen contestants sought

Application are now being accepted for the Annual Delta Theta Tau Apple Festival Queen Contest. This year the contest will be Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Bloomfield High School cafeteria. Linton girls fall softball league

Sign-ups for the Linton girls fall softball league will be Sept. 19 from 6 - 9 p.m. at the east shelterhouse at Humphreys Park in Linton. Girls between the ages of 5-18 are eligible. The league is open to all surrounding teams at $250 per team. Cost is $35 per girl and $10 for each additional girl. All games will be played on Saturdays with the first one being Sept. 12.

Antique truck show

The South Central Indiana Chapter of the American Truck Historical Society will host an antique truck show at the White River Valley Antique Association's antique machinery show Sept. 10-13 at Elnora. Financial seminar set for Sept. 14

The Central Greene County Ministerial Association will sponsor Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University beginning Monday, Sept. 14 at the First Christian Church in Bloomfield. The 13 week learning adventure will run through Dec. 7. Sessions will begin at 7 p.m. and conclude at 9 p.m. with childcare provided. The Financial Peace University is designed to help believers learn how to better manage their finances with the goal of becoming debt-free. Ramsey has a rags-to-riches, back-to-rags, back-to-riches story. He devotes his full energy to showing others how to achieve "Financial Peace" through biblical principles. Worthington collection box to be removed

Due to a decline in mail volume, the U.S. mail collection box at 240 West St. in Worthington will be removed.

Clothes pantry

The Linton Church of Christ is setting up a clothing pantry in the church garage. The pantry will allow people to trade good clothes that are no longer wanted or needed for other suitable clothes. The church has some clothes but is in need of donations, especially clothing for children. The church will also give away school supplies. Contact the church at 847-1894 to make a donation or for more information. The church is located at 4th and C Streets NW in Linton. Clothing pantry hours are 3-6 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays or when needed.

9-1-1 addressing reminder

Greene County residents can officially start using their 9-1-1 addresses after they have received an official letter from the U.S Postal Service in Indianapolis.

New book now available

"Guardians of Immortal Truth", book eight of the acclaimed "Guardian" book series by Ruby Moon-Houldson, is now available for check out at the Linton Library, along with the music soundtrack CD "Night Sins" produced for the "Guardian" series. A total of 10 books will be in the series and books one through eight are now available at the Linton Library.

Scotland Festival parade

2009 Black Creek Festival

Shakamak class of 1967 to meet

The 1967 Shakamak High School graduates should mark Sept. 25 on their calendars as a 60th birthday celebration is planned. The catered dinner/party will be at Shakamak State Park's log cabin starting at 4 p.m. with dinner scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The cost of the dinner will be $9 per person.
