Humphreys Park to be upgraded with new playground equipment

Friday, July 17, 2009
Linton's Humphreys Park is being upgraded with some new playground equipment.

"Some of the park equipment is in poor shape. So we bought four pieces this year," Linton Mayor Tom Jones said, adding more purchases may be made in the future.

Currently, a new swing set is up at the park.

"We're putting it up one piece at a time. It's a joint effort of the community and city workers," Jones said. "We want to get it up right. ... It's really, really nice equipment.""

The $13,452 purchase was made with park fund monies.

"There's a certain amount of taxes that go to the park. Monies are put aside. We made the purchase with that tax revenue," he added.

A slide, rock climbing wall and turbo tower have also been purchased.

"Our goal was to get it up before school was out," Jones said, noting the rainy weather hampered the project.

Some Linton-Stockton Elementary School students helped inspire the purchase.

"It was kind of planned out. But they (students) put icing on the cake," Jones said. "We're sorry we didn't get it done before school was out. We wanted the kids there to help us out."

Several third graders wrote letters to the city requesting new equipment at the park and offered to help, Jones said. A fourth-grade class also planted a butterfly garden at Humphreys Park last spring.

"It all transpired with a lot of community effort," Jones added. "You can't say enough about the positives in this town."

Look for the rest of the new playground equipment to be up soon.

"I hope the equipment is up before school starts. But I'm not sure it will be," Jones added. "It's not easy to put together."

I was at the park last weekend and thought the swings were getting pretty worn out. Good job with the new equipment. Linton is fortunate to have a nice park that is well used.

Like too many Linton people, GreeneCountyMan cannot see any good in anything. Any real or proposed improvement has to be marred by negative comments. This really get old.

I think the City of Linton is doing a FANTASTIC job on trying to make the park a better place for our kids to play at!!

Thanks for all the hard work on our beautiful park. Flooding or no flooding, its still a great place to go when the weather is nice.

Awesome! My kids love the park, I know they will be super excited to see new stuff there. Every time we drive by there they are always hollering at me to stop and let them play : )

I think it is great that we have some new equipment going up in the park. Most of the old equipment was there when i was little, over 50 years ago.I think it's time. My Grandson loves to play in the park when he comes to visit. Thankyou Mayor Jones.

My little girl is going to be thrilled beyond to hear they are going to put up a rock climbing wall and I am thrilled for her. What a great city!

As for the drainage problem, don't fix it! Good grief, this is a small town. It's exciting to watch the park flood every now and then. And even more exciting for the kids to get out and get wet, providing there is proper adult supervision to ensure safety. Not to mention, we always get a laugh watching the idiots out there get their vehicles stuck in the water! Just check out how many people are across the street at the BP laughing and watching as well!

im glad to see people responding to the new equipment but as a work for the city i really dont think the city needs new equipment for the youth to destroy if the people in this town had to clean the park every morning and fix the broken equipment all the time they would wont the new equipment ethier so if people want new equipment i think they need to teach their kids better mannors . there are alot of trash cans in the park but we pick up 2 to 3 bags of trash every morning most is from families eat at the park and then leaving it site i bet if we stopped picking it up for a week the whole town would be mad about it and as for the flooding again you dont half to clean up after it. and dont say it our job and we get paid good to do it i make minimum wage.and my job is to help keep it clean but why should we if the town dont care about it i say cloase the park till the people in the town learn to respect the park and its equipment im not trying to be rude just telling the truth

b_helton: Your work is greatly appreciated and I am sure that this appreciation from the many families such as my own goes unspoken. Yes, it may be your job that you get paid to do, but we all need a thank you every now and then, so on behalf of myself, wife, and children, thank you for the good job that you do. Thanks to you, my children have a clean, safe park to play in. As I am sure you know, all jobs have their frustrations. I work for the railroad and believe me, I get the one finger salute on a daily basis as I block the highway for a few short minutes that seems like an hour to most. Just try taking a little more pride in what you do, it will go a long way. I once cleaned toilets at minimun wage, but by golly my toilets shined like new when I was done with them!
