Writing class to be sponsored by Carnegie Heritage and Arts Center

Thursday, July 2, 2009

Attention students who find writing stressful and frustrating: The Carnegie Heritage and Arts Center is offering "Writing the Perfect Paragraph" for Greene County students in grades 7-12.

These sessions will be guided by the Indiana ISTEP rubrics for writing. One day is scheduled for each school:

* July 29 -- Eastern Greene.

* July 30 -- Bloomfield.

* July 31 -- White River Valley.

* Aug. 3 -- Linton.

* Aug. 4 -- Shakamak.

The session schedule:

* Session I -- 10 a.m. to noon, Searching for your idea, mapping the path, and starting towards your destination.

* Session II -- 2-4 p.m., Bringing out your creative style and discovering the fun in writing.

* Session III -- 6-8 p.m., Editing, re-writing, more editing, and reaching your destination (one page, 3-5 paragraph, well written document).

All students who wish to become more proficient at writing are invited. The workshop instructors have 30-plus years of experience and are published writers.

This program will be at the Carnegie Center and the Linton Public Library will collaborate by offering computer use.

All completed writings are to be displayed at the Carnegie Center for the month of August. An award will be presented to one student from each county school who submits an outstanding written composition.

Fees for the entire day are $40. A $20 registration fee is due by July 15 with the balance due the first day of class attendance. If needed, students from other schools may attend on another day. More sessions will be available at a discounted rate.

Co-instructor Sonna Berghaier commented on the workshop sessions, saying "We want to offer students a time of intensive study and guidance in a small group. This is not always available at school. Our goal is to enable students not only to become effective writers, but to learn to enjoy the process. We want to celebrate each individual's successful end result, perfectly written paragraphs that make up a well-composed document."

Contact Donna Kluesner at 381-2512 or Berghaier at 847-9895 for more information.
