Linton-Stockton Board prepares for new criminal and sex registry checks

Tuesday, June 16, 2009
Changes in legislation were discussed during the recent meeting of the Linton-Stockton School Board.

On July 1 all new employees will be required to undergo a national criminal and sex registry check, noted L-S Superintendent Ron Bush.

"It's a great idea. I have no problem with it," he explained. "But, I don't know h ow we're going to do it all."

Should an ECA sponsor -- who is getting paid a minimal amount-- be required to pay for the background checks, he noted. Should a volunteer have to pay.

"If we hire that person every year then we must do the check again," he said.

The problem with the legislation is that the new change could prove quite costly.

"We may not be doing any hiring this year...," he added.

In the past, a background check was performed on-line, he noted. About 30 to 40 people are hired for athletic programs each year.

But, that's not the only change in legislation.

Look for physicals to be required of all mini bus drivers beginning July 1.

In the past, this was not a requirement, Bush said.

"It's a good thing...," he added.

But, the problem is again the implementation.

"Schools use mini buses a great deal," Bush explained.

Sometimes mini bus drivers are volunteering their time.

In other business the board:

* Approved textbook fees

* Approved a Jr. Civitan trip to Michigan

* Approved Student Assurance insurance

* Approved the dairy/bread bid

* Approved advertising for the Latchkey program

It always comes down to money, doesnt it? And what about the ones who have not yet been caught or convicted? The predators and pornographers who are not traceable?
