Council Member Aaron Hamm provided the details on the legislation that will allow golf carts to be driven in towns and cities -- which will be effective July 1.
The state approved legislation in April that will allow golf carts to be driven in towns/cities if there is a local ordinance allowing it, Hamm said.
Provisions within the legislation require the driver of the golf cart to have a valid driver's license and the vehicle to have insurance as well as a revolving red or amber light or slow moving vehicle sign, Hamm added.
Council President Roger Doane said he will not vote for golf carts in town, but Council Members Jo Ann Carmichael and Hamm said they would.
Stipulations pertaining to when the golf carts could be driven would be established within a town ordinance, Carmichael added.
"Now we need public input," Hamm said.
A few members of the public who attended the meeting were in favor of a golf cart ordinance.

In other business, the safety of two downtown buildings was discussed.
Carmichael noted a safety issue at the buildings housing First Security and China House. Both have structural brick issues.
Both buildings have safety issues and barricades need to be put back up on the sidewalks, she noted.
Town Attorney Luke Rudisill advised that the town could take action as a unit.
"The town can take emergency action," he added.
In the mean time -- while work is being done to the downtown area -- Carmichael suggested the barricades be put back up.
In other business, the council made appointments to the comprehensive board.
Democrats serving on the board are Amber Branstetter and Dan Sichting. Republicans serving on the board are Bonnie Keith and Arlene Gastineau. Town associates serving on the board are Council President Doane, Council Member Hamm and Mark Bishton.

I think the golf carts should be allowed to be legal.
Impose the specific operating regulations for each town. Put teeth behind them. See how it goes.
They save a lot of fuel!!! Great for short trips. Especially now that the price of gas is creeping back up.
Okay, you know how much I HATE to agree but, I agree! A golf cart is as safe as any 4 wheeler when driven with some sense.
Are the owners going to repair their buildings sometime soon? What's the timeframe?
I think allowing golf carts on the streets is a stupid idea. There are too many areas in Bloomfield thats hard enough to see on coming traffic not to mention trying to watch for a golf cart.
KEEP THEM WHERE THEY BELONG - ON THE GOLF COURSE!
you shouldnt really be going much faster than what most golf carts go through town anyway. let them drive them.
Golf carts on city streets is the most retarded discussion I have ever heard. It is a waste of taxpayers time to even allow the discussion of regulating them locally. Just outlaw them all together on the streets...ya' know they call them golf carts for a reason...they are not called street carts, alley carts, shopping carts, gopher carts, etc... KEEP 'EM AT THE GOLF COURSE!
They just should not be allowed on city streets anyone.
They are not safe because they are abused by adults by allowing children to drive them and abused by children because they do not know traffic laws.
It is unlikely that police will ticket or impound these vehicles. But if they did...you better have a procedure and hefty fine in place for this...
How about getting of your duff and walking 4 blocks? Did you ever hear of those things called feet?
And besides all of these reasons...did ya' know that you look like a dumb$#@ driving that stupid thing down the road. Get a bicycle or take a walk to get your double-cheeseburger with extra mayo at the DQ?
Oh, and if its a replacement vehicle because you got a DWI...you should not be allowed to operate it either. Sorry about your luck...uh...correction...you lack of responsible decision-making.
communitycentered,
Did you read the part of the article that said you're required to have a valid driver's license to drive one? That's no different than a kid driving a car or someone who lost their license due to DUI driving a car. If someone like that is driving, I hope the BPD does do something about it, because it's illegal, whether car or golf cart.
What about the older people who can't walk those 4 blocks you mentioned, but want to save some $$ on gas? They could definitly benefit from being allowed to drive a golf cart.
Lastly... Who cares what you look like driving one? YOU will be the one looking like a dumb$#@ when/if gas goes back up and my golf cart has been running on the same $5 worth of gas all summer.
hey selfcentered, i mean communitycentered.....you make the make "why dont you get off your duff and walk"........well the same quote can be used with you about the yard saling. get off your duff and walk and you wouldnt have to worry about getting pulled over for not wearing a seat belt during operation pullover!
give me a break!
I love the idea of golf carts in towns, laws need to be followed by everyone driving them and enforced. Just look at the money saved on fuel, and for every golf cart on the street is one less car on the street. Other towns and small city's should look into this now, before we see $4.00 per gal gas again.
Golf carts are energy efficient, quiet, and environmentally friendly. Polluting and fuel guzzling SUV's & Pick'em ups should be getting the attention of the Bloomfield Town Council. Smaller and more fuel efficient vehicles should be welcomed and encouraged. The opposite should be unwelcome and discouraged.
