He was born in Sullivan County on Dec. 30, 1919, the son of Rosco Secrest and Alice Pearson Secrest.
Walter was U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a coal miner, and retired from General Electric in Linton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Herman Secrest.
Survivors include three sons; Larry Secrest (Judy) of Dugger, Edward Secrest (Linda) of Terre Haute, Roger Secrest (Melissa) of Linton; three sisters; Edith Bohnert of Jasonville, Ada Talpas of Dugger, and Gladys Harris of Plainfield; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Newkirk's Funeral Home in Dugger with Rev. Steve Talpas and Rev. Bryan Sluder officiating. Burial will follow in the K of P Cemetery in Hymera with military graveside rites by the Dugger American Legion.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. Friday and before services Saturday.
