Poland man taken to jail after accident on Lone Tree Tuesday evening

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

One man was taken to jail after he ran off the road, broke a power pole then failed all of the field sobriety tests given to him by a Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Tuesday evening.

Troy McDonald, 39, of Poland, Ind., was southbound on County Road 1000W, also known as Lone Tree Rd., in a 1994 Ford Explorer when the accident occurred around 9:40 p.m.

Deputy Jeremy Inman responded to the scene north of CR 400N and reported McDonald was not injured.

McDonald told the officer he just lost control and ran off the roadway. He also said he had gotten lost and thought he was on State Road 42.

McDonald's vehicle ran off the west side of the road, hit a mailbox and then a power pole. REMC was contacted and responded to fix the broken pole.

Inman reported that while speaking with McDonald, he was able to smell an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and offered field sobriety testing. McDonald failed all of these tests.

The driver was then offered a breath test which he also failed - testing at .13 BAC (blood-alcohol concentration).

McDonald was transported to the Greene County Jail where he was booked in on preliminary charges of three counts related to operating a vehicle while intoxicated. His bond was set at $4,000.

Deputy Brad Deckard also responded to the scene along with Linton Police Officer Jayson Smith and the Indiana State Police.

There is no margin for driving error on Lone Tree road. It's the most dangerous stretch of road around here. Why not start a movement to get the road improved. Maybe get the state to take it over and make it a state highway. Something definetly need to be done. Yes, I know, improving the road won't stop drunk drivers but it might save the lives of some of the rest of us.

what don't you understand about this mishap deano, he was drunk. this could have been a 6 lane highway and he still would have hit the mailbox.

Drunk driving is drunk driving.

What if the mail box was instead a car full of family?

Yes the road is dangerous. We have lived just off Lonetree since 1980, drive it daily, and only one out of the 5 of us been in the ditch and that was due to being ice covered and another road hog. Its just called, take your time and think about what your doing and where you are. You should not ask big brother to do something for you you can do yourself.

Deano

I am not sure where you got your information but it is incorrect. If you would check with the Greene County Sheriff's Department there is not that many wrecks on Lonetree compared to other county roads. If you want to know a really dangerous road it is CR 1250E off of State Road 54. This road has had atleast 8 people killed and several others injuried severe.
