A few rate increases were approved during the January meeting of the Linton City Council.

The council agreed to an increase in certain rates at Fairview Cemetery.

Mayor Tom Jones said the cemetery board met in December and had a lengthy discussion about increases. But the board decided this is not the time to make a lot of rate increases.

Both grave location fees and grave stone location fees increased from $50 to $75, Jones said. A $50 rate increase on Saturday burials was also made.

All rate increases will be effective April 1, Jones noted. The cemetery is $11,430.58 in the red.

Increases at the Phil Harris Golf Course were also kept at a minimum.

Jones explained, "The golf course committee recently discussed a cost increase but with the economic downturn we agreed to keep rates as low as we can."

The only rate increase concerns golf cart rentals, he noted. Rental was $11 and now it's $12.

In other business, discussion on a $10,000 increase for fire protection to Stockton Township residents was opened up.

Stockton Township currently pays $80,000 to the Linton Fire Department, Jones noted. It's $40,000 for the building and $40,000 for fire protection.

"We're proposing $90,000," Jones added, noting there's not been an increase since he's been in office.

Jones then asked if any Stockton residents had an opinion on the matter.

One resident spoke up and said, "Sounds reasonable to me."

Jones then wrapped up discussion on the matter by saying, "We'll talk to the trustee before passing it."

Jones noted his thanks to the firefighters for their hard work and diligence on the grant application process.
