No. 4 Lady Wolverines defeat No. 1 Rivet

Monday, January 12, 2009

In a battle of Class A powers, No. 4 White River Valley limited No. 1 Vincennes Rivet to 13 points in the second half as the host Lady Wolverines defeated the Lady Patriots 51-38 in a high school girls basketball game at Switz City Monday night.

The victory was the 13th in 14 games for WRV. It was the first loss for Rivet after starting the season 13-0.

"I thought our defense was exceptional in the second half," said WRV coach Joe Pigg. "We limited them to six points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth quarter.

"We really keyed on the (Sara) Young girl. She can really shoot the deep three. We held her to no field goals."

He added that they forced Rivet into 15 turnovers and limited them to 10-for-42 shooting (24 percent).

"I thought Tayler Kail played extremely well at both ends of the floor," said Pigg. "She played well defensively and hit three 3-pointers, including two big ones at the end of the third quarter to put us up nine or 10 and gave us some momentum going into the fourth quarter."

Stephanie Fougerousse finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Wolverines. Kelsey Anderson hit for 12 points, including a trey and 5-for-8 shooting at the foul stripe.

Alicia Tally made 7 of 10 free throws as part of an 11-point performance. WRV was 19 of 26 at the foul line.

Pigg said their goal was to commit 15 or fewer turnovers and they came up short of that mark.

"We had 25 turnovers, but we still won the game," said Pigg. "I am definitely happy about beating the No. 1 team in the state that was undefeated. I can be happy about that."

The Lady Wolverines will be off until Saturday when they host Class 3A Mitchell at 6 p.m. in another varsity-only game.

"We had to go to double overtime before we beat them (53-52) last year," said Pigg. "Stephanie had a big game for us. I believe she scored 35 points.

"They are another very good basketball team. They will be a tough test for us."

The number one and number four teams play and you don't send a photographer? What's up with that? Those of us who can't get out in this kind of weather really enjoy seeing a taste of the action. Color me disappointed.
