Biomass facility will bring new jobs to area

Friday, January 9, 2009

Linton's mayor is excited about Indiana Biomass Recyclers Inc. making its way to Linton.

In an interview with the Greene County Daily World, Mayor Tom Jones, offered more details on the city's future biomass employer -- which will be located across from the former Boltenwood Golf Course on State Road 59 North.

"I'm excited about it," he said. "We've been in conversations with the owners and things are progressing very well."

The facility is expected to bring 15 to 25 jobs to the area, Jones said.

As of now, the timeline is tentative but progressing faster than anticipated, he noted.

"It was expected to be a three-year process but as of yesterday (Thursday) the timeline is moving up faster," Jones said.

Stage one of the project will be biomass recycling.

"It will be a biomass recycling facility ... wood waste will be ground and they will make part of their fuel out of it," he exp lained.

At this time, the fuel will be formed at a Bedford site.

Stage two involves the construction of the facility at the local site. The cost estimate for this project is in the $7- $10 million range, Jones said.

The biomass products will then be made into a fuel at the Linton site, he added. The fuel will then be sent out to the open market.

Biomass products can include the waste from wood, coal, food and other items, he noted.

"We're pretty excited about what's going to happen. We want to make sure it all happens," Jones said. "It will be really good for the county ... it will be the only plant of its type in the country."

It doesn't matter about annexation, there will be more jobs for our county. That should be the most important thing right now, especially with the economy going where it is!

Thank you Mayor Jones for all of your hard work on this project. I know for a fact that this has been YOUR pet project for quite some time and now it is finally happening.

Many people criticize elected officials for a variety of things. I hope folks can also give an "attaboy" when great things like this new employer (the first of its kind) become a reality after many months of hard work and dedication to a vision.

Thank you. Good job!
