A Linton-Stockton graduate just had the experience of a lifetime.

Caleb Fischer is fresh off the plane from Spain after studying abroad for a semester.

Fischer, a Butler University junior who is double majoring in biology and Spanish, arrived back home the day after Christmas.

He explained, "It (studying abroad) really wasn't planned. I just kind of thought if I was going to learn Spanish I should be in a culture that spoke Spanish."

While there he studied literature, history, medical Spanish and grammar in the native language.

"The program involved 80 students from all over the States and all the teachers were from Spain," Fischer said.

But there was some culture shock.

"It was pretty hard especially in the beginning. I lived with a host family which was a good experience," he explained. "It was difficult in the beginning because my Spanish wasn't so strong, but as the semester progressed it became easier."

Overall, his experience abroad went very well.

"Within my classes the teachers were very helpful and my host mom was very helpful and that made the transition a lot easier," he added.

Besides the language barrier, Fischer also noted that life in Spain is just different than life in the States.

"In general the people are more relaxed. They have a different outlook on life," he explained.

In America, the definition of success includes a plate full of accomplishments, he added. But in Spain there's not so much pressure.

"It was good to see that," he said.

He also encourages others to study abroad if the opportunity arises.

"I would highly recommend that," he said. "I definitely will miss my experiences there. I could return some day ... I really don't know."

But for now, he's glad to be back home.

"There were definitely times when I was home sick. I missed my friends at Butler and I'm looking forward to going back."

Fischer, an 2006 LSHS grad, is the son of Kevin and Laura Fischer of Linton.

I am glad that things are going well for Caleb. He is a fine, young man, and one of the best students that I have had the chance to teach and coach.

If hard work is the determining factor in a successful life, Caleb is well on his way. You would have to look far and wide to find a more driven young person.
