Worthington man, woman face charges

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

A Worthington man and woman were both arrested after Greene County Sheriff's Deputy J. Aaron Smith was dispatched to a domestic disturbance on South Meridian St. in Worthington on Saturday.

Terry L. Garrett, 48, was booked into the Greene County Jail on a preliminary charge of battery with bodily injury and was released on Sunday after posting $1,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear at her initial hearing in Greene Superior Court on Jan. 2.

Garrett's ex-husband, Steven E. Sipes, 40, who resides at the same address as Garrett, was also booked in on a preliminary charge of battery with bodily injury. His bond was also set at $1,000 but as of Wednesday morning, he had not posted bond or been released. When Sipes was brought into Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing on Tuesday, a trial date was set for Feb. 18.

The probable cause affidavit filed in both cases indicates a fight in which both Garrett and Sipes allegedly battered each other.

According to the affidavit, the fight may have started after Garrett packed Sipes' clothes in bags and set them near the door.

Allegedly, from statements made by Garrett, Sipes and witnesses who were present, an argument started and Garrett punched Sipes in the face, then Sipes knocked Garrett to the floor and punched her in the head.

And then, somebody grabbed a brass-colored candleholder. On the scene, both claimed to have been hit in the head with the candleholder.

A witness called 911.

When the deputy arrived, Garrett was outside with blood on her face and clothing -- she had a laceration above a swollen, black and bruising eye.

Sipes had a reddish-colored bump on his left cheek bone and told the deputy he thought he had a concussion.

The deputy found the candleholder broken with blood on it. He also found blood splatter on the carpet and the television.
