Police searching for suspects who invaded home in eastern Greene

Friday, December 26, 2008

The hunt is on for two masked suspects who invaded a home in eastern Greene County during the night, tied-up the elderly couple that lived there, ransacked their home then fled in the couple's own vehicle.

At least one of the suspects was armed.

Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce called it a case of home invasion and armed burglary and said several law enforcement agencies have been working to assist the Sheriff's Department on the case since the call came in.

"We have a couple that has been severely traumatized -- that makes getting these two people number one on our priority list," said Pierce.

The call came into the Sheriff's Department at 3:43 a.m. on Friday. Deputy Skyler Pittman was the first officer to respond to the scene on County Road 1390E north of State Road 45 -- at the home of Ivan and Ruth Sparks, Route 2, Solsberry.

Pierce reported two suspects, wearing toboggan-like hats with face masks, broke into the home through a door, struck Mr. Sparks in the face, then bound both victims.

Mr. Sparks suffered a minor injury to the head but there were no other physical injuries to the couple -- believed to be in their 70s.

After ransacking the house, the suspects fled in a 2008 GMC Envoy owned by the Sparks.

Pierce said the vehicle was recovered later in the day. It was thoroughly checked by investigators after it was found abandoned on Breeden Road in Monroe County, at a location not far from the Sparks home.

The Sparks residence is located on the west side of CR 1390E which is also known as Chapel Road or the County Line Road because it's a dividing line between Greene and Monroe counties. The west side of the road is in Greene County -- the east side is in Monroe County.

Pierce said other deputies were quickly called in to work on the case but the department's crime scene investigator is on a holiday break. Pierce requested assistance from the Indiana State Police, other local police departments and notified all agencies in adjacent counties.

Besides the sheriff and a number of deputies, the Indiana State Police has assigned a crime scene investigator and two detectives, Brad Stille and Jeff Deckard, to assist and officers from the Worthington Police Department, the Bloomfield Police Department and the Monroe County Sheriff's Department are all working with the Sheriff's Department on the case.

Other details about the crime including information about what was taken during the burglary and a more detailed description of the suspects had not been released as of Friday evening. More information is expected to be released early next week, but police are hoping for a break in the case over the weekend.

Pierce said he knew news of the incident will cause concern to the public and he urged citizens to be aware of what's going on around them.

"When something like this happens in the middle of the night, people are sleeping and they're not prepared. I'm asking the public to pay very close attention to what's going on in their surroundings and be aware. If they see anything suspicious, do not hesitate to call us," said Pierce.

In addition, the Sheriff's Department asks anyone with information about this crime to come forward.

"If anybody has seen anything or has any information, please call the Sheriff's Department or any law enforcement agency or call Crime Stoppers," said Pierce.

The Greene County Sheriff's Department may be reached by calling (812) 384-4411. To leave a tip with Crime Stoppers, call 812-TIP-LINE.

This is really scary. I know Ivan really well he is really good friends wih my family. I hope you get these men. They are cowards going after an older couple. If the men read this come and pick on someone your own age and see what you get!!! I hope the police get them and they get knocked in the head like they did Ivan.

I quess it is a sign of the times with no jobs and all but when people lower themsleves to attack our elderly then that is unforgiveable.

Our older citizens should be respected not treated like this they have most likely worked hard all their lives and deserve to live to remainer of their in peace in love not fear.

I hope the police catch the scum that did this and throw the book at them they don,t derserve any breaks from the law or public

This really makes me sick. Everyone is suffering and people just have to make it harder on others by injuring them and taking what doesn't belong to them. I hope that they get these men and that they spend a long time behind bars.

The county council needs to approve funding for more deputies. One deputy on duty at one time is very dangerous, if that deputy was busy with another call it could have been a long time before someone got to the Spark's residence. The citizens need to complain to the county council. This is a safety need to our families.

The town police also help the county if the town police are on duty. If not the county has to cover the towns. It is a good thing the county police departments work close together.

This is very disturbing, people should be able to feel safe in their own home. I feel for these poor folks going through an ordeal like that. I pray that the people that did this are quickly caught and given a long sentence.

Someone knows something about who did this and it would be a damn shame if no one turned them in.

I want to see the lynch mob go after this couple when their names do surface. I'd back turning off the cameras in the police cruisers, using duct tape instead of handcuffs, and exerting some deadly force on these kids.

Sounds like you may also support G.W. Bush.

We can't have this in the county, we have had enough of it in the country over the last 8 years.

Let's not talk stupid here.

Let Justice take it's course.

Evolouie you sound like the typical red-neck. All you Obama worshippers are so funny and it will be funny to see how many followers are gone after the newness wears off.

It seems to me 4 years ago, most of America was singing Bush tunes. It happens to most presidents and it will happen to Obama too.

Hmmm...a democrat who favors change from the current status of America and who is against public lynchings.... Correct me if I'm wrong here but wouldn't that be the OPPOSITE of redneck?

As usual, you have made many assumptions and claims you can't back up.

First for some unknown reason you associate dislike for bush as being redneck, when infact the opposite is true. More southern/christian/lower income people voted for bush than any president in history.

Second you claimed that 4 years ago that most people supported bush, Again you are wrong. He never won the popular vote, not in 2000 or 2004.

It's all in the facts.

Blueyedame I agree.

A little off the topic aren't we?

Only in America can a elderly couple from Solsberry Indiana get robbed at gun point and it be the presidents fault lol, back to the news story, here's a question, if they took the Sparks's suv to get away then how did they get there to begin with? sounds like more than 2 people involved to me
