No newspaper on Christmas Day

The Greene County Daily World will not publish on Thursday to enable our employees to enjoy the Christmas holiday. The offices of the GCDW and The Shopper will also be closed on Thursday. Normal business hours will resume at 8 a.m. on Friday.

Recycling trailer

Greene County Solid Waste District's mobile recycling trailer will be in Lyons today through noon on Friday, Jan. 2.

New Year's Eve party planned

Jasonville American Legion Post No. 172 will host a New Year's Eve Party on Dec. 31, starting at 9 p.m. Music will be provided by DJ Spin Doctor. Open to the public.

Recycling Center

Due to the Christmas holiday, the recycling center will close at noon today and will reopen with regular hours on Monday Dec. 29. It will then be closed again on Wednesday, Dec. 31 and Thursday, Jan. 1 with regular hours on Friday. Jan. 2.

Linton Moose

The Linton Moose New Year's Eve celebration will begin at 7 p.m. Dec. 31. Dinner and doors open at 7 p.m. music by Dock Mill South at 8:30 p.m. $15 per person. For more information call (812) 730-4897.

Linton Library to be closed

The Linton Public Library will be closed today and Thursday for the holiday. Regular hours on Friday.

Christmas Eve Service

At Bloomfield First Baptist

The First Baptist Church of Bloomfield, located at 500 Lincoln Drive, will observe Christmas Eve with a special candlelight service today at 7 p.m. The service will feature the singing of traditional carols, soloists, special music from the Sanctuary Choir and Bell Choir, scripture readings and the lighting of the Christ Candle on the Advent wreath. The community is welcome to join in the celebration of Christ's birth. For more information, call the church at 384-8459.

Linton Church of Christ

The Linton Church of Christ will hold a candlelight communion service at 7 p.m. today. The church is located at 4th and C Streets NW in Linton. For more information call 847-4571.

Swearing in ceremony Dec. 30

Newly-elected Greene County officials will be taking their oath of office on Tuesday, Dec. 30. The official swearing-in ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in the Greene Circuit Courtroom on the third floor of the Courthouse.

Holiday closings at the courthouse

The Greene County Courthouse will close at noon today for the Christmas holiday and will remain closed all day on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 25-26. The Courthouse will also be closed all day on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 31-Jan. 1 for the New Year holiday, but will be open at 8 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 2.

Linton trash pick-up

There will be no trash pick-up in Linton on Dec. 25-26. Instead, Thursday's trash route will be picked up Saturday and Friday's trash route will be picked up Monday. There will be no trash pick-up on Jan. 1. Instead, Thursday's trash will be picked up on Friday pushing Friday's trash pick-up to Saturday.

The Trinity Lutheran Church will host its Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. today.

The Lyons First Christian Church will host its annual Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. today.

Tobacco Cessation Class

slated to begin Jan 13.

A tobacco cessation class will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6 - 8 p.m. Jan. 13 -- March 10, 2009 in the conference room at Greene County General Hospital. Free nicotine replacement therapy (patches or gum) will be made available to class participants for the duration of the class, courtesy of the Greene County Public Health Department. You must register in advance to participate. Class facilitator Chris Sparks is a certified tobacco cessation counselor through Community Intervention, Inc. and Clarian Tobacco Control Center (Clarian Health Partners). To register, or for more information, please contact Chris at 847-9496. Individual cessation counseling is also available by calling 1-800-QUITNOW or the GCTPC office (384-8769).

Shelter reservations

The city of Linton will start booking city park shelter reservations on Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, barring inclement weather. The mayor's office will be open at 8:30 a.m. Reservations will be taken in the order the person arrives and a number will be available at the customer service window. You may pick up an application at that time and have it partially filled out allowing the line to move faster. Application must be filled out and payment must be made when the reservation is confirmed. Rotary Club will be having the 2009 Rotary races in the city park Sept. 19 and 20 and all shelters will be closed for that weekend. The Music Fest will be held in the city park on Aug. 28-30, closing the shelter houses also. Please be advised that the city has permanent bookings each year. These reservations must be confirmed to the mayor's office by Dec. 30, 2008. If you cannot come in on the scheduled day you may call in after 1 p.m. on Jan. 2 and schedule your reservations by phone.

Christmas Eve service

Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church, four miles south of State Road 54 on State Road 57, will host a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service today at 11:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

2009 Goose Pond calendars

The 2009 Goose Pond calendar is available for sale at Main Street Gifts in Linton and the Greene County Community Learning Center at White River Valley Junior-Senior High School in Switz City. The calendars showcase area winners of the first annual Goose Pond Photo contest. Calendars are a fundraiser for the Friends of Goose Pond and sell for $10. Calendars can also be shipped to out of state locations by contacting friendsofgoosepond@yahoo.com .

Shrine Club

Greene County Shrine Club New Year's Eve Celebration is Dec. 31. Doors open at 7 p.m. with finger foods - MaRones at 9 p.m. Call 665-2637 or 812-699-0395 for tickets $20 per person. Public invited.

Greene County Humane Society

Greene County Humane Society's Annual Stuff a Stocking is now under way. Items needed for the animals include Chew Hides, toys, stuffed animals and treats. Cleaning supplies such as Pine-Sol, paper towels, baking soda and laundry soap are also needed.

Delta Theta Tau Omicron Rho

Delta Theta Tau Omicron Rho is selling homemade chip beef, old English, cherry and cherry chocolate cheese balls for $5 each. For more information call 798-2465.

House of Grace

House of Grace Coffee House will offer fellowship, food, worship and youth classes. The church is located at 792 S. Section St. in Dugger.

Pleasantville food pantry

The Pleasantville United Methodist Church food pantry is now open on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from 10:30 a.m. - noon.

Bloomfield Library program

Children and their parents can now sign up for the Bloomfield Library's Family Reading Program that runs now through Jan. 31. Each Monday in December there will be a "make and take" craft table set up in the children's area with a holiday craft. Children can drop in any time and make one of the weekly activities. Crafts will include, ornaments, greeting cards and more. Also watch for a Holiday Scavenger Hunt over Christmas break.

Tri Kappa cheese balls

Linton Tri Kappa has cheese balls for sale. Cheese balls with nuts are $6.50 and plain are $6. Contact Beth Gillan at 847-2010 or any Tri Kappa member to purchase a cheese ball.

Sonshine Shop

The Greene County Soil Waste Management District and Recycling Center is partnering with the Sonshine Shop on 14 N. Washington St. in Worthington. There will be a collection site starting Monday for paper, books, magazines, plastic, aluminum cans, steel food cans and cardboard located in the back of the Sonshine Shop by the blue building. Residents are asked to drop off recyclable materials only and do not leave trash at this site.

Worthington Senior Citizens

The Worthington Senior Center is selling persimmon pulp. Cost is $4 for a two-cup package. Call 875-2525 or 875-2012 to order.

Worthington Tri-Kappa taking orders

The Worthington Chapter of Tri Kappa is taking pre-orders for Uncle Al's Pecans and Candies, cheeseballs, and soups. The cheeseballs are $5 each for either chipped beef or cheddar. The soups choices are chili, vegetable, potato, and ham and bean. The soups are $4 per quart. The cheeseballs and soups will be made by the Tri Kappa members. GED preparation classes

Turning Point Education Center in Switz City is offering GED preparation classes. Class times are available Monday through Friday from 8:15 to 11:15 a.m. and noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays 5 - 8 p.m. Interested students may contact Misty Hunt at 659-2533 for program information and enrollment requirements.

Greene County Soil & Water Conservation district is redirecting Clean Water Indiana Grant Funds to provide assistance for sediment and nutrient flood damage projects not covered under Farm Service Agency or Natural Resource Conservation programs. GED testing

GED testing for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is given on the second Tuesday and Wednesday of each month at the Greene County Community Learning Center housed at White River Valley High School. Those wishing to take the exam must register in person, one week prior to the exam and present three pieces of ID including one photo ID. Lyons Senior Citizens center

The Lyons Senior Citizens Center, 150 N. Jefferson St., now has wooden toy crafts for sale. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Lyons First Christian Church youth group

The Lyons First Christian Church youth group meets at 6 p.m. on Mondays at the church's East Broad Street location.

Dugger Legion to meet

The Rexford Ballard American Legion Post 224 will meet the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

Jasonville Senior center update

The Jasonville Senior Citizen Center, located at 145 S. Lawton, has opened a country store and gift shop. It will be open from 9 a.m.-noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. All proceeds will benefit the senior center. For more information, call the center at 665-9882.

Wig bank

The American Cancer Society announced its wig program is now being offered to cancer patients at Pam's Style Shop in Bloomfield. Lebanon Baptist Food Pantry will only be open on the fourth Thursday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m.

Bloomfield Food pantry

The Refuge Assembly of God food pantry will be open every Wednesday from 1-5 p.m. to assist those living in Bloomfield. To donate, please contact Trina at 384-8093 during the pantry's open hours.
