BLOOMFIELD -- White River Valley outscored host Bloomfield by six points as the foul line as the Class A No. 4 Lady Wolverines remained undefeated and clinched no worse than tie for the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference championship with 46-43 victory here Monday night at Guy Glover Gymnasium.

The Lady Wolverines, now 12-0, 6-0 in the SWIAC, hit 10 of 16 charity tosses in the fourth quarter. They connected on 19 of 28 as guard Kelsey Anderson made 12 of 16, including two in the final minute.

"This was a big win," said Anderson, who finished with a team-best 16 points to go with three rebounds. "It is always good to beat your biggest rival, especially at their place.

"I did OK at the foul line. I couldn't seem to get the first one to drop in the fourth quarter. They just rolled around the rim and fell off. But we made enough to hold on for the win."

Bloomfield, who slipped to 7-4 with its first loss in four conference games, had made 5 of 6 freebies in the third quarter to turn a 26-23 deficit into a 35-34 cushion.

Siera Fuller, who was 9 of 11 at the line, connected on four straight as the Lady Cardinals led 37-34 with 7 1/2 minutes remaining.

WRV had 12 more attempts than Bloomfield, who finished 13 of 16 at the stripe.

"The free throw line was the difference in the game," said Bloomfield coach Kyle von Almen. "We knew that Anderson was going to try to dribble penetrate.

"She was able to get to the basket and draw quite a few fouls. She made us pay at the foul line."

WRV made several key plays down the stretch to keep the Lady Cardinals at bay.

After center Stephanie Fougerousse hit 1 of 2 foul shots, Sam Goodman rebounded the miss and her putback gave WRV lead for good at 38-37 at the 6:25 mark.

Tayler Kail canned two free throws, accounting for her only points, with 107 seconds remaining to give the Lady Wolverines a 42-40 edge.

Fougerousse, who had nine points and five rebounds, then went to the line and swished two with 1:19 to play.

"We knew that the free throw line would be important because of the way they get after you defensively," said WRV coach Joe Pigg. "We hit some big ones, but we still missed too many.

"...But the biggest thing was the way we stepped up and made big plays in the fourth quarter. We really executed well when the game was on the line. It was really important for us to have a game like this, win or lose. It was very competitive. We just found and a way to win, which always is important."

Alley Gilliland made 3 of 5 3-pointers and finished with 12 points for Bloomfield, who has lost two straight to WRV and three of the last 11 meetings.

Both teams are done for 2008. Bloomfield will play at North Central on Thursday, Jan. 8.

WRV will play at North Knox on Tuesday, Jan. 6 in another varsity-only contest.

White River Valley certainly is NOT done for 2008 with a home game on Saturday against Barr-Reeve. Congrats to the WRV players and coaches for a fine win in a hostile arena. It is good to see the players start to buy into the TEAM concept. Good luck Saturday and 12 and o, way to go !!!

Great game girls! It's games like these that prepare us for post-season play.

Every game, we get closer to being ready. Every game, we play more as a team. I'm excited for what's to come! Now that the keg is safe for a while, let's defend our undefeated status with a win over Barr Reeve Saturday. Go Lady Wolverines!

-lol- umm.. because it's more than Alicia that makes up White River Valley girls basketball?

-- Posted by WhiteRiverValley on Thu, Dec 25, 2008, at 6:02 PM

I believe I have seen pictures of Graves, Fougerousse, Kail, and Anderson, so its not just ONE girl all the time, what has Alicia ever done wrong for someone to be that rude?

Squeaky wheel gets the grease!!!!!!!

Peoplesrepublic

You are comparing apples to oranges in your last post. I do not believe that the newspaper is having that hard of a time getting "good" pictures...they do this for living and are very good at it, so I do not think your reasoning is correct.

Apparently you care. It's odd that you think that the only "good" pictures that are captured are mostly of the same girl in basketball and then you bash a terrific girl (both personality and athleticism) that plays softball who just happens to be the coaches daughter. I definitely see the "handwriting on the wall" on this subject!

Someone's arm gets in the way...come on. The last picture was taken under the basket at the end of the court where no one sits or stands to watch the game. You're going to have to do better than that! It's not like the photographer is sitting in the stands when taking these pictures for the newspaper. Good grief.

peoplesrepublicofstockton - I think if you would go back and look at the softball pictures you would see that you are being really unfair in regards to your statement of: "one and only persons picture that is in the paper all the time." You would find that the team was represented by the media in the paper. You would also find that the coach made numerous praises throughout the season about the players. She chooses to make positive statements and not negative statements about her players in the media. You also need to look at where WRV softball came from and what the program has accomplished in a very short period of time. Let's face it, there is not much talent on the team and for the team to be as competitive as it has been for the last two years, the coach deserves better. As far as the player that you are choosing to berate, she will probably play Division I softball. Her ability is the talk of the community and personally she is the best player that I have ever seen play softball at the high school level. Battering her to make a point about your favorite player is disappointing.

Great post. I agree 100%.

To Linton Stockton Republic:

This is not the White River Valley softball coach? Not sure where you got that?

And I'll explain the -lol- umm a little better..

I didn't mean it to bash that particular player. I said it because I thought that statement of "why do you need other people's pictures?" was amusing because why WOULDN'T you need other people's pictures? There are 10 girls on that basketball team, why would it ever be acceptable to use the same girl all the time, regardless of who it is? The umm.. was to point out the obvious.

I have more class than to bash high school girls over a newspaper site..

Please be respectful. I guess some people don't know what this means. What did Alicia do to you. She earned these pictures herself. She is a team player. Why drag her mom and her best friend into it. I just found out about all the Tally bashing or I would have been here sooner. SEE YOU ON THE 12th. Keep up the great work ladies, we are proud of you.
