GCSD deputies work 13 accidents caused by ice

Thursday, December 18, 2008

Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce reported deputies responded to 13 accidents that happened between 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and 12:15 a.m. Wednesday -- when Greene County was being covered with ice from a freezing drizzle.

A number of other accidents were reported in the hours that followed as salt and sand trucks were out treating the roads.

When Deputy Jeremy Inman responded to one accident in Beech Creek Township around 5:50 a.m. on Wednesday, he said several other vehicles ran off the road while they were attempting to stop on the ice near the original accident scene. Inman said none of the vehicles that slid off the road were damaged, no injuries were reported and all of the vehicles were removed in about 30 minutes.

Inman first responded to the scene on County Road 480N near CR 1310E in response to a report of a driver who had run into a pole.

Brock Douglas, 47, Solsberry, was eastbound on CR 480N in a 1991 Chevy Blazer when he lost control on the ice-covered roadway. The Blazer left the roadway and struck a pole -- Douglas was not injured.

The Eastern Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the scene to help with traffic control.

Sheriff Pierce responded to one of the first accidents reported during the ice-up -- a two-vehicle collision in Stockton Township around 4:35 p.m. on Tuesday.

Jason Bruner, 30, Lyons, was southbound in a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck on CR 1125W. When he attempted to stop at the intersection at Base Road, he was unable to stop due to heavy ice covering the roadway and he slid into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

The oncoming vehicle was a 2004 Jeep Wrangler being driven by Scott D. McKisson, 27, Linton. He said he was unable to avoid the collision with the sliding truck.

Pierce reported no injuries as a result of the crash.
