Two Eastern musicians to participate in Youth Orchestra event

Thursday, November 20, 2008

Two rising Greene County musicians will soon take part in a youth orchestra concert in Bloomington and Bedford.

Eastern Greene High School student Matt Jenness and Katie Kapelsohn, who is home-schooled, are both members of Musical Arts Youth Orchestra (MAYO)-- a regional youth music organization which draws young players from 11 southern Indiana counties and offers programs in orchestra, jazz, and chamber music.

Jenness, a violist, and Kapelsohn, a harpist, will take part in MAYO's Rising Stars concert.

The Bedford concert is today, Friday November 21, at 7:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center at Bedford North Lawrence High School, 595 Stars Blvd.

The Bloomington concert is tomorrow, Saturday November 22, at 7:00 pm in the auditorium at Bloomington High School North, 3901 N Kinser Pike.

The Musical Arts Youth Orchestra, under the direction of José Valencia, will offer a program which includes Leonard Bernstein's "Overture to Candide" as well as Howard Hanson's "Second Symphony".

The concert is free and open to the public.

During this musical production, members of the Bedford North Lawrence High School orchestra, under the direction of Guy Rumsey, will also perform.

The concert is free and open to the public.

According to its Web site www.mayomusic.org, the MAYO mission is to provide musical training to a wide array of students of all levels and backgrounds, to promote excellence while fostering individual development, and to prepare students not just as musicians but as community members.

Students of all ages, from grade school through college, are welcome to audition for MAYO. Financial assistance is available for any who may need it.

Musicians are expected to participate in their school music programs and to study their instruments seriously.

For more information about MAYO programs, see visit www.mayomusic.org, e-mail info@mayomusic.org, or call 330-0890.

Congrats to them but i think they should have chosen 2 students that are actually at school everyday. There are alot of very good students that would have liked to have been chosen.
