UPDATED: Six jail inmates charged Monday in escape plot that included late night sexual encounters

Six inmates in the Greene County Jail in Bloomfield have been linked to an escape plot that involved at least three male and three female prisoners.

They are alleged to have moved through the ceiling from their respective segregated cellblocks to engage in sexual activity on numerous occasions in the last two months.

The inmates were formally charged with escape -- a class C felony -- on Monday and arrest warrants issued through Greene Superior Court on Monday. The inmates are expected to be making their initial appearances in the next few days.

Bond for each was also set at $10,000 on the escape charge.

They include:

* William N. Hutcherson, Jr., 44, Bloomfield, being held for a probation violation.

* Jesse B. Ross, 38, Linton, being held for possession of a controlled substance.

* Alexander Rathburn, 17, Bloomfield, being held for burglary, theft and possession of stolen property.

* Misty M. Moore, 21, Bloomfield, being held on theft, possession of stolen property and forgery charges.

* Kay C. Snyder, 27, Springville, being held for criminal recklessness and battery with bodily injury.

* Nicole Halderman, 26, Linton, being held for possession of a controlled substance.

Snyder has been transferred to Monroe County Jail in Bloomington. The other inmates remain in the Greene County lockup.

Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce told the Greene County Daily World that the plot came to light Oct. 8 after jail employees David Sparks, Roberta Pierce, Marlene Newby, and Denise Andrew conducted a search of a male and female celblock and uncovered letters that detailed the clandestine meetings that had been going on between the inmates out of the view of security cameras.

Letters recovered in a search of cellblock F-1 (the female lockup) indicated that the inmates had made their way through the ceiling area, making contact with each other -- including sexual activity, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by Greene County Sheriff's Department Det. George Dallaire.

The two cellblocks are located side by side and separated by a concrete wall, according to Sheriff Pierce. He said it's the only area in the jail that has "dorm" style accommodates. There are six beds on the female side and 12 in the male cellblock.

Pierce said the investigation is ongoing and other current or former jail inmates may be charged in connection with this activity.

The movements from one cellblock to another was thought to have begun in early September.

One female inmate told police that her cellmates Halderman and Moore began the after-midnight meetings in the male cellblock after they were successful after months of trying to pry open some ceiling tiles using a shower drain cover, Dallaire wrote in his probable cause affidavit that was presented to the Greene County Prosecutor's office.

The female inmates used the shower drain cover as a tool and then "head-butted" the ceiling tile to gain entry, according to court records.

The inmate told police that when Snyder was booked into the jail the encounters became "an every night occurrence."

The three woman are alleged to have placed a plastic laundry hamper on top of Halderman's bunk bed -- out of the view of a security camera -- and stood on it to reach the loosen ceiling tile and climb over the male cellblock.

The inmate also told authorities that Hutcherson -- who was known as "Nick" -- and Ross came over to the female cell block. She said Hutcherson came over to the cellblock "to see" another female inmate, Jeanie Stephens, two times. The inmate alleged that Ross came to have an encounter with Halderman "three or four times."

She also told police that notes of letter passing from the male cellmates and female cellmates were common and stated that laundry and food trays were the most common ways to transport them.

Through interviews, police learned that encounters would be initiated after midnight -- when the jail commander was off work, according to court documents.

One male inmate, who was interviewed by police, stated that he witnessed Moore, Halderman and Snyder come into the male cell block "at least 15 times" during his incarceration, Dallaire wrote in his probable cause affidavit.

He told Dallaire that when the trio of female inmates would enter the male cellblock, they would "hang out, play cards and have sex with some of the male inmates."

Sheriff Pierce said the incidents are "embarrassing" to he and his staff, but he pointed out that he has been aware of design flaws in the jail that was constructed in 1994.

Pierce acknowledged that the inmates are crafty and with plenty of time on their hands, situations like this can occur.

"If your facility has a flaw, if you house prisoners in it, they will show you (the flaws). They will find it," he said.

Pierce said he was glad that the inmates were not able to breach to the outside area and escape the facility.

The sheriff said the jail's security camera system needs improved to curtail what he called "blind spots" that allowed this incident to go on undetected for an extended period while the facility was being staffed.

"The camera system was not sufficient when it was put in. ... We don't have a camera in every cell," Pierce told the Greene County Daily World.

The sheriff said he plans to approach the county commissioners soon to ask for their help to remedy the situation.

"We're going to have to find a way to have a better security system," he concluded.

Isn't Nicole Halderman's husband/boyfriend in Greene County jail too? LOL This is too funny to even comment about, these people are helpless...

Sounds like the jail officers are NOT doing their jobs. Cell searches are to be done. Cell checks are to be done routinely. Someone is asleep on the job.....

-- Posted by Alayane on Sat, Nov 15, 2008, at 8:04 PM

Sounds like they are having more fun in there than most law-abiding citizens!

-- Posted by Disturbed1 on Sat, Nov 15, 2008, at 9:20 PM

i think its funny they got "snitched" on..this is one of the most hilarious ordeals i have read about..these people probably have never even met before their stay in Greene County Hilton...

-- Posted by bornNraisedINLinton on Sun, Nov 16, 2008, at 4:13 AM

I think its funny they got snitched on. Hopefully this will open the counties eyes, and the problem will be fixed before those on the inside find their way out to the outside and hurt someone.

-- Posted by Concernedingc on Sun, Nov 16, 2008, at 6:22 AM

Alayane, did you not read the story? They did a cell check, the inmates were doing all of this in blind spots of the security cameras those officers have a lot of responsibilities I don't think we can blame them for this.

-- Posted by lintonite on Sun, Nov 16, 2008, at 10:01 AM

Sounds like the officer were doing their job and that was why they got caught. Our county jail does not have enough staff to watch them 24-7. The prison at carlisle has an officer in every cell block 24-7. We just can't afford that here but more cameras sure would not hurt.

-- Posted by ActLikeYouHaveABrain on Sun, Nov 16, 2008, at 12:34 PM

Good Job Greene County jail, I know you are not staffed like the prison is, and cannot patrol like they do. Our county has been cut back so bad by Mitch. I hope the County residence can see that! If funding doesn't increase there cannot be better supervision!!!! Thank you Mitch!!! maybe you should outsource the county officers!!! Yes I voted, so that gives me the right to gripe! hope you all that voted for him are happy!

-- Posted by just my opinion 3 on Sun, Nov 16, 2008, at 7:40 PM

I don't feel real comfortable with our current employees at the jail if it took about 2 months to find this out. Do they not check very often or what? Seems like it would take more than a few minutes to "play cards and such". More cameras would help but "personal" view can't be replaced.

-- Posted by mother2 on Mon, Nov 17, 2008, at 4:27 AM

As usual, there's always someone that has to throw the blame where is doesn't belong (officers). The inmates got caught, leave it at that. Stop looking for blame in the wrong places as to everything that happens and start condemning the ones that are guilty. Some things happen in life that is beyond our complete control.

-- Posted by joe citizen on Mon, Nov 17, 2008, at 6:43 AM

You have got to be kidding me..... I just wanted to let everyone know as a former inmate of the Greene County Hilton that this is not the first time this has happened. As a matter of fact when I was in there a few years ago we had the very same thing happen, and that wasn't the first time that it had occured or even the tenth time.

-- Posted by GREENE on Mon, Nov 17, 2008, at 7:29 AM

Are the girls are trying to get pregnant, so they have a 'get out of jail free' card in 9 months?

-- Posted by The Raven on Mon, Nov 17, 2008, at 7:46 AM

I am the only one wondering why there are two children pictured? I must have missed where they were mentioned in the story...

SMC:

*Alexander Rathburn, 17, Bloomfield, being held for burglary, theft and possession of stolen property.

*Misty M. Moore, 21, Bloomfield, being held on theft, possession of stolen property and forgery.

sounds to me that the snitch was jealous and wanted in on that action.

Thanks for the info. I thought those people looked A LOT younger than they actually are. I would have guessed them way, way younger. Thanks for the info!

YOU KNOW THIS MAKES A PERSON SICK. MAYBE HUTCHERSON CAN GET OUT ON WORK RELEASE AND WORK IN THE LINTON CITY PARK AGAIN. WE ARE PRAYING FOR ALL OF YOU.

-- Posted by meme on Mon, Nov 17, 2008, at 1:44 PM

Yep, Just my opinion 3, this is Mitch's fault.

And so is global warming, the big 3 automakers going under, wildfires in California, obesity in America, the Colts being 6-4, Jimmie Johnson winning his 3rd straight Nextel Cup.......

Quit blaming everything on that which you don't understand! The real problem is this: These people are responsible for their....get this....OWN ACTIONS! WoW! That's what got them there in the first place!

-- Posted by on the Blood trail on Mon, Nov 17, 2008, at 1:58 PM

If there is any blame that can be placed it is on the idiots that designed and built the jail. I seem to remember Vigo county had problems with their jail too. We need laws to protect our counties from contractors that often cut corners to save money and rip off the public. How much is our new courthouse? I guess the county needs to sue these companies too!

-- Posted by ActLikeYouHaveABrain on Mon, Nov 17, 2008, at 4:00 PM

Sorry but I don't find this funny at all for the families of these people. How would you feel if this was a member of your family being talked about, or how would you like to read these blogs and find out people want to lay the blame on a grandmother who has done her best to keep her grandchildren and great-grandchildren out of foster care. We all hope to raise good children who go on to have wonderful families of their own, but it doesn't always turn out that way. I sure hope "whatsupingreenecounty" is never faced with being blamed for the actions of their own family. If you really know this family......you would know they have been through enough.

-- Posted by sportsfan 4-ever on Mon, Nov 17, 2008, at 5:45 PM

omg this is toooo funny! only in greenetucky...

-- Posted by anon on Mon, Nov 17, 2008, at 6:45 PM

On the Blood trail, I so agree..they are in jail because they chose to break the law, they themselves, not the parents or grandparents, seems they still keep breaking the law. You would think they would learn something..HA

-- Posted by sassy12 on Mon, Nov 17, 2008, at 6:58 PM

Sportsfan 4-ever,

Sometimes children aren't better off with a parent or grandparent simply to keep them out of foster care. The idea of foster care is to get children into the homes of people who can better raise, protect, and educate the children. It is wonderful when a grandparent can step in for the parent to help or even sometimes take over the parenting duties, but to imply that children are better off just because they are with a grandparent is nonsense.

-- Posted by coin collecting on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 6:43 AM

This is to sportsfan 4-ever. Why should this grandmother have a 3rd chance to raise a set of kids? No one else in that county gets a 2nd chance to raise kids. It must be WHO YOU know in the system, not how good of a job someone else could do of raising the kids. Why don't the system allow a different set of grandparents to raise them? maybe they could do a better job.

-- Posted by leftthestate on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 7:21 AM

Only in Greene Co Jail would 6 people put their heads together and figure out a way to "have sex" and forget about trying to actually ESCAPE. I mean if out is what you want why stop to dance on the wild side?

They have all made the national spotlight as well! Here's your 15 minutes of fame! What a waste.....

-- Posted by GC Resident on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 8:01 AM

lol

-- Posted by Chaney on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 9:51 AM

Place the blame where it lies---with the person who commits the crime! Some of the best people in the world grew up in the worst of homes...the reverse is also true--some of the worst of people grew up in the best of homes. Life is full of choices---these people chose to take the illegal route. Blame them and make sure they receive the appropriate punishment for what they have done. Don't bring their families into this...

-- Posted by lakermom on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 10:16 AM

If truth be known.... people in this county do get second and third chances to parent a child. I am not saying just because your family, it makes you the best option for a child, or that all people deserve second chances....but I thought "whatsupingreenecounty" was being very harsh with their statement "look who raised her mother! and her"! You can be the best parent in the world and your children can still grow up and disappoint you. This mother you're speaking about has one really great son..... did you think about how your comments might hurt him, and his family?

-- Posted by sportsfan 4-ever on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 10:22 AM

Let's dance shall we. Sports fan and laker mom thank you for the honest comments. First of all sounds like whatsupingreenecounty has a personal note with nichole. There are 6 people involved why arent they mentioned. Second This story is so blown up its really not funny. I this is a big big big bunch of crap. Most important, those who do know my parents know my siblings and I were raised with god fearing parents and great respect and morales, are personal choices we made poorly on our own. Choices I say. You don't know what drove us to choices either do you, personally mine being raped by deacon, raped again as teen, ect. Dont go where you don't know. I learned from my poor mistakes and I am by the grace of god doing great. So you dont know what we are going thru or have been thru, but what we know we have a great god who will not let our eniemies rob us and what doesn;t kill us will make us stronger.......

-- Posted by mothershelly on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 12:00 PM

Why are we focusing on the story of extreme fabrication and the gcs dept using this to get a upgrade on a less than 10 year old jail??? I too know that things far more than this which gets no attentiion... Hooch being made on a reg basis, pills being traded for smuggled in. Tobbacco legal and illegal being smuggled in lighters, acid, ect. yes I know from a person first hand they took in 2 1/2 grms of anhydras when they did 40 some days and it was a male about 1-2 yr ago. That seems like an issue??

We do hurt more than you know,, Could be Just because nichole been in there a while does it mean she is a part. you don't know you dont know.. leave us alone... My parents are good people my aunt whoes health not well helps we are doing what we can to keep our family, that what family dooo.... People that are jealous of family try to create misery. These are just words, words can hurt, someday soon look us in the face can you ....

-- Posted by mothershelly on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 12:08 PM

Maybe for thier next act the ladies can try this at the Women's Prison in Indy.....

-- Posted by pooka1 on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 12:23 PM

i am the youngest and the brother of nichole , get of my familys back. I have did alote of bad stuf but the funny thing is, when i did my Family was not beside me at the time of my actions. They where there for all my good stuf. What i mean is, they tought me right from wronge. The wronge thangs i did was my doings not my familys but all the right things i have did, i would of not of been able to do if not for my family.

so you might say my sis is bad or i am bad but you dont know any thing about us!!! We made bad choices not bad people....

-- Posted by death angel on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 2:24 PM

Guilty until proven innocent again ONLY in Greene County. has anyone defined escape? going from a cell to another cell for sex is not escape.thats unsupervised visiting!! did they try to leave the grounds? try an outer wall? 10-1 says they will beat this escape charge. however we'll have to wait for the courts to decide huh?

-- Posted by stack oflyons on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 3:13 PM

We can see who CHOSE not to go to school, cant we?

-- Posted by pooka1 on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 4:35 PM

Although some of the statements made on here may be harsh I must say I agree with them to an extent. You can not put the blame on the parents or grandparents all the time. I know this first hand as i have some unruly step children who have gottent hemselves into plenty of trouble. We do not condone any kind of illegal activities in or out of our home, But there mother seemed to think it was cute and showed them how to do those activities. As a parent you can not allow these things to go on and sometimes need to use tough love...any time one of our kids got in trouble they paid the price. Not all of this (Nicole h.)family are bad people. However some of them did not help teach them any other way of life...others have bailed her out of jail and backed her when she has done wrong. So be careful what you say lets not hurt the innocent here. Those of you in her family who have lived the life she is living now and bailed her out every time she gets in trouble you should be ashamed for allowing her to be taught this life...those of you who have not lived this kind of life...I am so sorry you are having to read all of these negative comments...it is not your fault.

-- Posted by sissy on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 4:51 PM

sportsfan 4-ever there is two of us.

-- Posted by death angel on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 6:27 PM

Even though it doesn't make 100% sense, they ARE guilty of escape.

The definition of escape in a jail or prison system includes "being unaccountable" for any length of time. If a jailor had looked into the cell and seen that someone was missing, that person would be unaccounted for, since the jailor had no idea where he/she was.

For example, a prison inmate that's supposed to be in the gym, but somehow leaves and goes back to his cell, could also be charged with escape, because he's not where he was supposed to be.

isn't it illegal for the paper to print a juviniles Name? The 17 year old is still considered a juvinile until he is 18.

-- Posted by just my opinion 3 on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 8:19 PM
Response by Greene County Daily World:
Alexander Rathburn -- the 17-year-old is being held for burglary, theft and possession of stolen property -- all felonies. He is being tried as an adult -- so it is legal to use his name in the newspaper.

now if one of them are test positive for a std does that mean the county has to foot the medical bills? or pregnancy, who pay's? this is unbeleivable!

I think its wonderful that these grandparents/adopted parents want to raise these children, but aren't they getting up in years? there are so many people who cannot have children and would love them! why not give them an opportunity to be a parent?

-- Posted by just my opinion 3 on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 8:34 PM

Yep those of us who work and pay taxes pay for the medical bills for prisoners. Hopefully they have all been neutered and spayed since they seem to have the morals of common alley cats.

-- Posted by pooka1 on Tue, Nov 18, 2008, at 8:48 PM

shucks folks wears yer manurs? dontcha no thay dinnit no no bedder?

Look at their faces, do they look like they really care??

You've got Goldie Locks: "want my number sugar?"

Gomer: "DUH!!"

Orphan Annie: "I swear it was their

idea"

Baby Face: "What'd I do?" (personally

he needs a switch taken to

him for even being in

trouble")Shouldn't he be in

school by the way? Hmm...

Rick Springsteen: "My eyes are buggin'

out man, gimme

somethin'"

Heidi Fleiss: "Yea, you bet your boots

I'd do it again stud"

I don't feel one bit sorry for any of these people. They KNEW what they were doing was wrong when they got in trouble in the first place and they KNEW what they were doing was wrong when they were engaging in their "extracurricular" activities. I DO feel sorry for their families and the embarrassment this has caused them. Do you think I'd like to read the paper about my son or daughter?? NOPE!! It's a shame and very pathetic.

Oh and it just brings a warm, fuzzy feeling over me that I am working my rear off to support my family and I've got to help house these goobers. It's wonderful that they will stay warm and fed this winter....that money could've went to help some family and children in need.

Do you think they are trying to get an upgrade and just made up this Fabrication??? the security has been in question for a number of years probably the last time you were in, it was. Second of all your parents raised their children and your children and now are raising your daughters children! How much are you going to put them thru! I think its time for you to grow up along with your daughter! and stop depending on the taxpayers to support your lifestyle (whatever it may be today)

As the sister of one of the inmates, it is hard to see your brothers name in the paper for something so stupid. But what my brother did was his own fault and prolly deserves worse then what the court will hand him. my brother has been allowed to continue to get into trouble and only recieved a slap on the wrist, in my opinion the charges should be left at a class D felony. and to comment on the messages about the jailers doing there job, thats a bunch of bull, there are people that will openly tell you what kind of people we have watching our inmates, some of them should be in there with the inmates. in closeing i just want to add that you all should just leave this matter alone. its hard enough on the families of these people without you adding to the drama.

this is turning into a massive gripe fest lol! what concerns me is not so much the inmates tho its messed up. its the fact that i have lived up the road from the jail since it was built. its not up to standard???? why is it we cant afford things like humane society things and the school budget gets cut all the time but we seem to have just built that jail ten years ago. i guess people in Greene county are so worried about something scandals to talk about to stop and realise your worried about paying for their health care? THEY WANT TO BUILD A NEW JAIL!! who do you think pays for that?
