National commander to visit

The national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Glen M. Gardner, Jr., will visit VFW Post 7117 in Worthington on Thursday at approximately 3:45 p.m. The local post is planning a special welcome for the commander before he speaks to area VFW members about efforts to increase VA funding, provide long-term VA health care and ways to support current members of the military, National Guard, reserves and their families.

Northeast Sullivan School Board

The Northeast Sullivan School Board will meet in executive session at 6:30 p.m. and in regular session at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the administrative building in Hymera.

Free Thanksgiving dinner

A free Thanksgiving dinner will be offered to all from 5-7 p.m. on Nov. 24 at the Roosevelt Mission -- located at 89 E. Vincennes St. in Linton. Menu includes turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, rolls, dessert and drinks. To volunteer or donate food call the Mission at 847-8110.

Linton trash pick-up

Due to Veterans Day, Linton trash pick-up will be a day late with the exception of Monday.

Today's Market madness workshop

A free informational workshop on how to weather today's market will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 at the Greene County Learning Center in Switz City. Randall Brown, of Edward Jones, will present the workshop. To reserve your spot call 659-3862.

Bloomfield NARFE to meet

The Bloomfield chapter of National Active and Retired Federal Employees will meet Tuesday at Stoll's in Linton. Lunch will be at 11:30 a.m., and the meeting is at 12:30 p.m.

Oddfellows dinner

The Oddfellows will hold a Thanksgiving dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 18. Bring a covered dish, and meat will be furnished.

Solsberry American Legion

The Solsberry American Legion Post 450, Sons of the Legion and the Legion Auxiliary Unit 450 will have a carry-in Thanksgiving dinner at 6 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the post home. Games (no bingo), door prizes and a silent auction are scheduled. All members and their families and friends are invited.

Woodworkers club

Woodworkers Club will meet Monday at 7 p.m. at the Shakamak School Library. Coffee and popcorn will be served.

Veterans program at Bloomfield

The Bloomfield School District will conduct its annual Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. on Tuesday at Glover Gymnasium. Veterans are encouraged to contact the jr./sr. high office at 384-4550 to RSVP. Veterans will be recognized during the program. Parking will also be available for the guests. Lt. Clayton Ostergren, NJROTC instructor, will be the featured speaker along with family members of soldiers from the Indiana National Guard Combat Team Alpha 1-151 Team Avenger from the Linton National Guard Armory.

Bloomfield Strut 'n Fret

The Bloomfield Jr./Sr. High Strut 'n Fret will present "Into the Woods" on Nov. 20-22 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 23 at 2:30 p.m. at the Shawnee Theatre in Bloomfield. Tickets are now on sale. It's $10 for adults, $8 for students, and $5 for kids 12 and under. Nov. 23 is family day with all tickets being $5. Linton city-wide yard sale meeting

Those interested in bringing a city-wide yard sale to Linton are invited to attend an informational meeting at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12 at the west shelterhouse at Humphreys Park in Linton.

Spaghetti dinner

Folsom United Methodist Church's SONshine Preschool will host a spaghetti dinner from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Worthington Park Community Building. Proceeds will benefit a new playground for the school. Menu includes spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, homemade desserts, and drinks. A free-will offering will be accepted. WRV drama club

The White River Valley High School Drama Club will present the musical "Oklahoma" at 7:30 p.m. today in the high school cafeteria. Tickets are $4 and can be purchased at the door.

Blood drive

The Indiana Blood Center will host a blood drive from 4-7 p.m. on Monday at the Linton First United Methodist Church.

Christmas Bazaar

The Sullivan County Extension Homemakers Christmas Bazaar will be from 3-7 p.m. on Nov. 20 at the Sullivan County 4-H Fairgrounds on East Washington Street.

Linton leaf pick-up

Dan Linneweber benefit

The Wheatland Lions, Sandborn Lions and Salem Church in Westphalia are hosting a fish fry (with trimmings) benefit for Dan Linneweber at 4 p.m. today at the Sandborn Lions Club. Book fair

The Greene County General Hospital Auxiliary will host a book fair from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Nov. 11 in the hospital lobby featuring new books and gifts.

White River junior parent meeting

The White River Valley junior parents will meet at 7 p.m. on Nov. 13 in the cafeteria. All parents are encouraged to attend and turn in money from the discount card and calendar sales. T-shirt sales and other fundraisers will be discussed.

Veteran's service planned

Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton will have a Veteran's Memorial Service at 1 p.m. on Nov. 11 on the lawn on North Main Street. The service will remember service men and women who have served or are serving the country. Refreshments will be offered immediately following the service.

Breakfast at Glenburn

Glenburn Community Center will host a biscuits and gravy/omelet and bacon breakfast from 7 - 10 a.m. on Nov. 14.

Soup supper

The South Linton Church of God, SE K St., will host a soup supper Nov. 15 from 3-7 p.m.

Turkey supper

The annual Pleasantville United Methodist Church turkey supper is from 3 p.m.- ? today. Cost is adults $8, children 4 to 10 $4, and children 3 and under free. Canned goods and nonperishable items for the community food pantry would be appreciated.

Linton Moose

Linton Moose will a dance with live music at 8 p.m. today.

Mineral UMC revival

Mineral United Methodist Church will hold revival at 7 p.m. Nov. 20-21. Pastor Lee Bahney will be welcomed during the event.

Genealogy workshop

A genealogy workshop will be held from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Linton Public Library. David Benefiel will again provide information on the subject. This workshop is not for beginners, but those who wish to learn more about genealogical research. Participants should be familiar with the use of a computer and the Internet and be prepared to conduct research during the workshop. Participants should bring a flash drive, at least one completed "Family Group Sheet", a notebook and pen, and change for copies. There will be a lunch break from noon until 1 p.m. Those who will have visiting family members are encouraged to sign them up for the workshop or bring them along. Author to speak at Linton Library

James Hutchinson will visit the Linton Public Library on Nov. 13 to present a program to children at 3:30 p.m. and for adults at 6 p.m. He will talk about his two books, "Through These Eyes," based on the diary of his service in the Eighth Air Force in World War II and "Bombs Away," his soon to be released book, based on amazing stories of death and survival on bombing missions, mid-air collisions and Prisoner of War experiences from other veterans of the WWII Eighth Air Force and boyhood tales from the Great Depression. Veterans Day program

Shakamak Schools will host its 21st annual "Salute to Veterans" program at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the high school gym. Vets, firefighters, law enforcement officers and emergency personnel responders will be honored.

Worthington Tri Kappa Annual Bake Sale

Worthington Tri Kappa will host its annual Bake Sale on Nov. 22 from 10 am - 2 p.m. at the Fire Station at the corner of US 231, Washington Street and Main St. We will have a wide variety of homemade baked goods. Our beef and cheddar cheeseballs will be available as well as a selection of Uncle Al's nuts.

Beekeeper group to meet at fairgrounds

The Wabash Valley Beekeepers Association will be holding a meeting Nov. 13 from 7-9 p.m. at the Greene County 4-H Fairgrounds. Information will be available to those who want to know more about beekeeping, from getting started to winterizing hives. This will be an excellent opportunity to collect and exchange information and ideas, and meet other area beekeepers. A question and answer session will be held. Corn hole tournament

A corn hole tournament will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Jasonville Fire Station. Registration at 9:30 a.m. All proceeds go to Supporting Heroes.

Luminaries being offered at no charge

Beta Sigma Phi is making luminaries for Veteran's Day to be displayed at Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel. If you or someone you know is a veteran, or you have a loved one who has passed and would like them to be included, please contact us so we may include your name on a luminary.

Bloomfield Street Department

The Bloomfield Street Department will be picking up leaves in November. The week of Nov. 10, streets running east and west, the leaves will be picked up.

Don Lawless, street department supervisor, asks that all leaves be on the upper side of the curb and not in the streets so that the leaves do not clog up the storm drains.

Christmas bazaar

The Carlisle Christian Church Christmas bazaar and chili supper will be from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. today. at the community building on Alexander Street. There will be raffles for different items, and one is a homemade jelly cabinet. There will be lots of other homemade items for the Christmas holiday, fresh baked pies, candies and cakes and the chili supper prepare by the ladies of the church.

Arts and Crafts fair

The Owen Valley Patriot Band and Guard Boosters are hosting an Arts and Crafts Fair from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. today in the Owen Valley High School Auxiliary Gym. This craft fair will benefit the entire band program. The School is located on Highway 46 in Spencer. Any type of art or craft items are welcome at this event. Booth spaces will be 10x10, and will cost $25 with $10 extra for supplied electric. LSHS band selling trash bags

Sonshine Shop

The Greene County Soil Waste Management District and Recycling Center is partnering with the Sonshine Shop on 14 N. Washington St. in Worthington. There will be a collection site starting Monday for paper, books, magazines, plastic, aluminum cans, steel food cans and cardboard located in the back of the Sonshine Shop by the blue building. Residents are asked to drop off recyclable materials only and do not leave trash at this site.

Worthington Senior Citizens

The Worthington Senior Center is selling persimmon pulp. Cost is $4 for a two-cup package.

Solsberry Christian Church

Dailey & Vincent will appear at Solsberry Christian Church at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. The church is located one mile east of Solsberry on the old portion of State Road 43. No admission charge, but a free-will offering will be received. Also appearing will be "That Other Bunch". Everyone welcome.

Worthington Tri-Kappa taking orders

The Worthington Chapter of Tri Kappa is taking pre-orders for Uncle Al's Pecans and Candies, cheeseballs, and soups. The cheeseballs are $5 each for either chipped beef or cheddar. The soups choices are chili, vegetable, potato, and ham and bean. The soups are $4 per quart. The cheeseballs and soups will be made by the Tri Kappa members. LSHS 2009/Parent Club

The LSHS Class of 2009 and Parents Club is selling Miner discount cards for $5. These cards are available from senior students and parents, and offer valuable discounts from local businesses. The senior parents are selling chances for a handmade walking stick crafted by Ralph Fulford, grandfather of Jacob Tibbett. It is decorated with Linton Miner music and athletic carvings. These chances are $1 each and 6 for $5. Miner cards and chances for the walking stick are also available at all home football games.

GED preparation classes

Turning Point Education Center in Switz City is offering GED preparation classes. Class times are available Monday through Friday from 8:15 to 11:15 a.m. and noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays 5 - 8 p.m. Interested students may contact Misty Hunt at 659-2533 for program information and enrollment requirements.

White River Valley junior class

GED testing

GED testing for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is given on the second Tuesday and Wednesday of each month at the Greene County Community Learning Center housed at White River Valley High School. Those wishing to take the exam must register in person, one week prior to the exam and present three pieces of ID including one photo ID. The Lyons Senior Citizens Center, 150 N. Jefferson St., now has wooden toy crafts for sale. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Jasonville Senior center update

Wig bank

The American Cancer Society announced its wig program is now being offered to cancer patients at Pam's Style Shop in Bloomfield. Bloomfield Food pantry
