Linton police chief offers safe Halloween tips

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

With Halloween quickly approaching, trick or treaters should use extra caution when in search of sweets and treats.

Linton Police Chief Troy Jerrell advised trick or treaters to only visit homes with porch lights on.

"Trick or treaters should also wear reflective clothing as well as only visit homes of people they know," he added.

For safety, children should also carry flashlights and not dress in dark-colored costumes that are hard for drivers to see.

When it comes to the treats, Jerrell suggested a safety check.

"Advice to parents is to make sure they check their child's candy. ... That should be a good, safe habit," he added.

Parents should also keep a close eye on children while trick or treating.

"They (children) get excited. ... Just keep an eye out and make sure they don't run in the street," Jerrell said.

He also cautioned motorists to keep an extra eye out for little ghosts and goblins in search of treats.

"As far as motorists, they need to be aware and keep in mind that there will be extra kids out running up and down sidewalks," Jerrell said. "Follow all traffic rules, be observant a little more than they normally would. Ultimately everyone have a safe and happy Halloween."

* Trick or treating in Linton will be from 6-9 p.m. on Oct. 30 and from 6-9:30 p.m. Oct. 31.

* Bloomfield's trick or treat dates and times are Oct. 30 and 31 from 6-8:30 p.m. The town asks that you only go to homes with the porch lights on.

* Linton's Spookfest is scheduled for Oct. 30 from 4-9 p.m. at Humphreys Park -- with the Halloween parade kicking off at 6 p.m.
