One airlifted to Indy after serious midnight accident south of Switz City

Saturday, October 11, 2008

Three persons were injured in a serious accident involving one vehicle and a deer south of Switz City around 12:38 a.m. Saturday. One woman, Robin Hodges, 39, was trapped and had to be extricated before she was air-lifted to an Indianapolis hospital with severe trauma.

Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Christopher P. McDonald reported that David M. Rapp, 50, Evansville, was southbound on County Road 600 W. south of C.R. 450 S. in a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck when he veered to avoid colliding with a deer. In the process, he struck a culvert which caused him to lose control.

Besides Rapp, there were two passengers in the vehicle, Hodges and Effie Williams, 54.

McDonald said the truck traveled several hundred feet before striking a drainage ditch. It then inverted.

When rescue units arrived on the scene, Hodges was trapped and suffering from a severe laceration to the head.

Rescue personnel removed her from the truck and she was then transported by AirEvac #39 to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis.

Later in the morning, around 6:30 a.m., McDonald said her condition was reported to be serious but stable and she was on life-support at that hour.

The other passenger, Williams, was reported to have only minor injuries and was not taken to a hospital.

The driver, Rapp, also received a laceration to the head and was transported by a Greene County Ambulance to Greene County General Hospital.

Deputy McDonald said the accident remains under investigation and that criminal charges may be filed, pending the results of a blood-alcohol test.

Agencies assisting on the scene included the Greene County Sheriff's Department, Greene County Ambulance Service, AirEvac Service, Switz City Volunteer Fire Department, Bloomfield Police Department and Lyons Police Department.

Correction: The first report that Williams was airlifted to Indy was incorrect. It was the other passenger, Hodges, that was transported to Indianapolis.

The way I'm understanding it from the family is this article is incorrect. Anna Rochelle got the 3 names correct and the details of the wreck are correct, but the person who was air lifted was not Effie Williams, it was Robin Hodges.

My thoughts and prayers are with her as she makes a speedy recovery.

Mr Rapp was not arrested because his blood alcohol level didn't register over the legal limit
