Linton resident Deidra Brumfield and Linton City Council member Linda Bedwell hope to establish a city-wide yard sale event in Linton for 2009.
That's a great idea!
If you've ever been to the events at Bloomfield and Worthington, you know how popular they've become. It's not easy to get around at those events because of all the sales and people. That in turn means more money for the residents and community.
The idea has been kicked around by others in Linton, but has never really gotten off the ground. Brumfield and Bedwell should be commended for spear-heading the idea and bringing it up at the Linton City Council meeting Monday.
They plan on getting ideas from the community to find out how it will all work. Some ideas were thrown out at the meeting.
There was talk about having it the same weekend as the Greene County Foundation Festival, which features the annual An Evening With Roy Clark and Friends show and the Friends of Phil Harris Scholarship Golf Tournament.
Mayor Tom Jones suggested having it in conjunction with a spring festival. He said he's been thinking about putting together a spring festival for a while.
Those are all good ideas.
It's important for everyone involved with the city-wide yard sale idea to be on the same page, and consult others who may have a hand in whatever weekend that is selected.
If the Greene County Festival Weekend is the weekend organizers want, then the Foundation should be asked before any final plans are made.
It may be wise to plan a separate weekend for the city-wide yard sales, which could allow for the focus to be solely on the sales and any other activities that are planned (like a festival).
There are probably some service organizations, school groups or church groups willing to help organize a city-wide yard sale.
This has the potential to be big for Linton and the surrounding area.
Thank you to Brumfield and Bedwell for putting the discussion before the public.
