Linton residents hope to organize city-wide yard sales

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

The beginning stages of establishing a city-wide yard sale in Linton are now under way.

The idea was brought to the forefront by local resident Deidra Brumfield and Linton City Council Member Linda Bedwell during Monday's Linton City Council meeting.

Brumfield explained that a city-wide yard sale would be good for the local economy and could include sales throughout Linton and the surrounding residential areas such as Green Acres.

"It would bring extra income into Linton," she added.

Bloomfield, Worthington and other neighboring communities already have town-wide yard sales events, added Council Member Linda Bedwell -- who also mentioned holding the event in the fall and spring.

It could be incorporated during the Greene County Foundation Festival weekend and Linton's homecoming, Brumfield suggested.

Mayor Tom Jones asked if the Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce had been contacted about the idea.

Brumfield replied yes, and added that the chamber is extremely busy with the 34 Days of June during the Foundation Festival weekend.

"If it's put together as a city-event would you sell advertising or let the paper sell it," Jones asked.

Ads would be sold to be included on the map, but the maps would be passed out for free, Bedwell said.

If there is a profit, the park is in need of playground and park equipment, Jones noted.

"I've been kicking around the idea of a festival in the spring at the park," Jones said, noting a yard sale event would go right with it.

"We can't lease out the park for public profit but we can have a special ordinance for park events," he added.

In the end, both Jones and the council gave the proposed event a thumbs up.

In an interview Tuesday morning, Brumfield explained the idea further.

"This is something the whole town could benefit from," she said, noting the idea is to also include local service organizations.

Local churches, the high school band, and other organizations could use the yard-sale event as an opportunity to hold fundraisers, she said.

"Linda (Bedwell) and I have been talking about this for a couple of months," she explained. "We're in the early stages of planning. We're talking with others who already have town-wide yard sales."

The goal is to hold Linton's first city-wide yard sale during the next Foundation Festival weekend (which includes the Roy Clark show and Phil Harris scholarship golf tournament) -- which is scheduled for May 30-31, Brumfield added.

Bedwell and Brumfield are co-chairing the city-wide yard sale committee.

If you are interesting in the event contact Brumfield at 699-0154 or 847-8207.

"We're open to suggestions and willing to talk to anybody with questions or comments on the matter," Brumfield added.

Sounds like a great idea, I hope they can change the weekend they are thinking of having it on, I personally think we would have a better turn out for it on a weekend that has not already got any festivities planned.

i like the idea of a communit yard sale however i think having it during the roy clark festival is a really bad idea...ther is already festivities going on that weekend with the show and the golf tournament. the people that go to the show and are involved with the tournament would not be able to participate in the yardsale event...not to mention the chaos it would add to that weekend. I say have it at another time like mayor jones stated. in my opinion we are going to get nowhere by holding all of our events that help our community at the same time.

"At least it won't cost the city $50,000+." was very community-oriented comment, whatsup. *sarcasm*

too bad some can't see the positive side of anything huh mr jimmyjoejingle? this is a community event that should be something positive I don't see anything negative about it, other than a bitter jimmyjoejingle who obviously has a bit too much duck tape maybe you should donate it for price stickers! wouldn't want to leave you out of this community event

Amen, whatsupingreenecounty! I don't want any youth to stick around either while we all wither and die here! I say duct tape is the answer!

There are some of us who would love to be a part of it! since both Jones and the council gave the proposed event a thumbs up, We can start the Cleaning out the closets! At least it won't cost the city $50,000+.

I think this is a wonderful idea. We should think positively on this & turn the negatives into positives. It just takes some creative thinking.

Yep, been discussed on the Lintonian for months.

I agree, Rainman96, jumping over $500,000 dollars to pick up some change... Smart move, Council.

somerclueless wins three internets for being awesome!

somerclueless, maybe you should contribute rather than condem. It takes everyone to make a community event successful. Its a shame you look at the negative.

I think you should assist; since you seem to know what Linda does so wrong, maybe your insite could be your contribution to the community event.

Remember when you point your finger at someone there's 3 pointing right back at ya!

I think it sounds like a great opportunity for everyone to recycle & I personally know alot of people who really look forward to the town-wide yard sales at Worthington, Bloomfield, Bruceville, Sandborn, Elnora, and the list goes on! Good luck Linda & Deidra & hopefully somerclueless!

More money for the community is not a new idea. I think months ago we let money, big money away from the community in jobs and so on with the vote against the Youth Center and Sports Complex. Much less the amount of money spent this summer in dinning and lodging during just one tournament. Also, just to let all know that the weekend that they are discussing is part of the 34 days of June if you know your community. I just would like to know how many fire hydrants has been fixed with the money saved?

Oh, I had wondered what came about with the Farmers Market, the couple of times I went out past the Park looking for the Market, I didn't see anything. But I am all for a city wide yard sale like Worthington and Bloomfield has, I enjoy walking around with the hope of finding somethings I might need or want and seeing people I haven't seen in awhile.
