Telephone scam with a new twist hits the area

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

Linton Police Chief Troy Jerrell said it's another scam, with a new twist.

A woman answered the phone at her home in the Linton area, "Hello?"

A male voice on the other end says, "Grandma?"

The woman hesitates then asks, "Christopher?"

The voice replies, "Yeah, it's me. I'm in Canada and I need some help. I've been in an accident and they won't let me leave until I pay fines and I don't have enough money."

Another voice, that of a supposed 'official' from Montreal, then comes on the line and explains that Christopher can't get on a plane back to the states until fines and costs from this accident are paid and everything is settled up - it'll be about $2,500. He suggests a wire transfer of funds so the money will get there quickly and Christopher won't miss his flight.

Jerrell said he took a report on this incident on Tuesday afternoon after this family called the police.

"In this case, the woman's grandson lives out of state and she doesn't talk to him on the phone very often so she could not tell that this was not his voice. Luckily, she checked everything out before she made arrangements to send any money," said Jerrell.

The woman first called the mother who did not think her son would be in Montreal. The mother was able to get in contact with him and determine that he was safe and sound at his home in the states and had not been in any accident in Canada.

The grandmother did not go to the bank after all - she called the Linton Police Department instead.

Jerrell said there's always something new coming along and it could be easy to make a mistake.

"We think we won't be the one to fall for a scam but after talking with this woman, I can see how easy it might be to be taken in. I hope this is an isolated incident but I want to warn people and remind them to be very careful whenever anyone asks you for money, said Jerrell.

The 999-99-9999 may not be a scam or sales people. The telephone system (Verizon) for the company I work for always shows up on caller id as 999-99-9999. We are a very ligitimate company with a high number of employees who live in Greene County (high paying jobs as well).

HA! HA! That scam definately wouldn't work with my grandma! My grandparents grew up during the depression and money doesn't flow too freely from their hands, even if it were true, I imagine I'd be sittin' in Canada for a while...

Taking a few extra minutes to check the story out with her grandson was the smart thing to do. Their claim that he would miss his flight if she didn't send money immediately was a good sign that this was a scam. I'm glad they didn't get away with their deception. I am also glad this grandmother called police and made the public aware of yet another telephone scam. I hope people, especially the elderly, will be careful to check things out before sending any money to anyone over the phone or by mail.
