Linton man accused of stealing trailer

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

More than one trailer has been reported missing in Greene County in recent weeks.

In the case of one trailer stolen from a rural Linton property, charges were filed against a suspect Tuesday.

A warrant for the arrest of Johnny May of Linton was ordered Tuesday after a preliminary charge of class D felony theft was filed in Greene Circuit Court.

May is accused of stealing a red, 18-foot, car trailer which belonged to Gary Gregory of Linton. The trailer was stolen off property on R.R. 2 that was owned by Ted Poe.

On Sept. 23 around 3:50 p.m., the Greene County Sheriff's Department received a report that this trailer had been stolen and dispatched officers to investigate.

In a probable cause affidavit filed in the case, Deputy Bobby J. Pierce states that he and Det. George Dallaire interviewed three different people who witnessed May hook a blue truck onto the trailer and pull it away from the property. They also interviewed another person who saw May on the property minutes before the trailer disappeared.

By 8:30 p.m. that same day, Pierce and Deputy Skyler Pittman were interviewing May at his mother's house in Linton.

According to the affidavit, "Johnny May denied all involvement with the theft of Gary Gregory's trailer and also stated ... that he had painted his truck black about three to four days before the theft."

However, the affidavit states that the two deputies saw May's truck and noticed that "the paint on his truck appeared to have places that were still wet." It also states that the truck smelled strongly of paint fumes.

The officers later talked to two persons who confirmed that May's truck was blue on Sept. 23 but said they later heard that May had painted his truck.

People never cease to amaze me. I am completely dumbfounded.
